@dlowan,
No, but I got a lot of leads off of there and will definitely use them in the future. I like that better than the site I normally use. Thanks for the help.

@dlowan,
Was about to recommend this site too. It's not that well known but is like the "ebay of spaces" as they say.

There are other "couchsurfer" ones as well but seem to be more tailored to the individual.

What New York State's Illegal Hotels Law Means for Travelers
Is your hotel room in New York City really legal? What you need to know about short-term apartment rentals.
July 28, 2010
The new law doesn't help tourists figure out what's legal, so it's a huge pain for travelers. But B&Bs, couch shares, spare rooms, and anything listed on New York's official www.nycgo.com [http://www.nycgo.com/hotels/] site are all still in the clear, according to the city tourism board. I'll tell you how to find a legal vacation in my story "Where to Find Legal Short-Term Apartment Stays in New York City." http://www.frommers.com/articles/6918.html

I used them and got a great place in Lower Harlem for $50 a night...a few streets north of Central Park.

Just a brief update: The flight out of Raleigh was canceled by bad weather, but got to NY Sunday, been sightseeing non-stop and the kids are worn out. Wicked was great last night, the room is not in the best neighborhood, but completely meets our needs and is two blocks from the A train, so we are doing ok. Still burns me that I got conned but putting it behind me.

@engineer,
Thanks for the update, even more glad that you resolved all of this ahead of time... imagining you schlepping over to the condo, late and ready to start your vacation already, and THEN finding out that you've been conned.

I wonder if the guy who accepted your money even actually lives at the condo?

Anyway, have fun! (I so need to get to NYC.)
