Is that how Republicans do it?

Resigning was pointless. The hounds of the media, having gotten a whiff of scandal, are not going to give up the chase just because he resigns. Rolling Eyes

Oh, look, no one read my link. What a surprise. Too bad - it wasn't all anti.

Do you all flinch when I give a link?

@ossobuco,
Well, I personally don't flinch, but I also feel no compulsion to follow links anyone posts on this site.

I bet they do. It seems like the story has cooled down dramatically already. As long as he held on it would be a scandal, but now it's yesterday's news.

@engineer,
The person who provided the photos etc. seems to think that this wasn't the only time he did such a thing, and that makes sense to me re: his willingness to resign. If he resigns after this he's just a shirtless doofus. If he hung on after this broke, then reporters would be digging for more dirt and he might have been concerned about what they'd turn up.

For the record, I think it's both incredibly stupid for an American politician in this day and age to do something like that, and stupid that in this day and age it's such a big deal.

@ossobuco,
I read your link. I read the story when it first came out.
It's one of the reasons that Tom Coburn has my grudging respect.

That happened long before he became a republican... They just can't help it... They are always on the prowl for some one to screw...

I agree with the last part, I don't get why he had to resign even if wasn't the first time.

Many of us read others' links without commenting. None of it is wasted.

The most I have ever done for any politician is vote for them... I have not laid down in bed with one of them, or given them intimacy, or children, or cooked a dinner for them, but all these things my wife has done and often, for me... Now; if my wife could not trust my oath made to her before God and humanity to be faithful, why should anyone believe any of my oaths??? It is a mere formality... People pick up the Bible or what ever book they follow, and make an oath, but no power under heaven can give them the honor to abide by their own words... Only they can fill up those words with meaning... Only they can give value and weight to their words...

Your question presumes that the honorable relationship of representative to represented means nothing, and with good evidence since we have been so often betrayed... If we cannot expect honor from those who represent us we forget that it is our due, but also our debt to all in society... Such moral forms as honor are social glue, and when enough people believe they can act dishonorably, expecting the peace of the honorable to protect them in their vice and vicious behavior, the society will come apart at the seams, and no one will have any trust of any other, or count on trust, or be worthy of trust... That is where we are getting to, folks...

Either we will have to breathe new meaning into the old form of honor or we will have to trash the old meaningless form down, and start from scratch... The sense of honor is essential to every relationship, but in our society it is a relic of a bygone age... People once defended their honor with their lives.... The Jews and perhaps many others would literally put their nuts in the hands of another to make an oath, and that is where we get the term: testify... But where money is dear, honor is cheap, and where ever a money economy grows up the honor economy fails... Now; those politicians trade on their honor for money... They must have it to trade it... Let them all go to hell if they will not abide by their oaths...

@Fido,
Fido, believe me when I tell you first off that I am not making light of your post, its really deep, also an interesting sideline info where the term testify comes from.

I am just saying that we do not force our own moral codes of honor on others. It is not illegal to commit adultery whether you make a vow and sign marriage license or not. Only the marriage is legally binding unless you apply for divorce, not the oaths a person may take when they get married. Some marriages make up their own vows and they may not have any words of faithfulness in them at all.

I haven't really kept up with Craigslist thing, I assume it has something to do with escorts and/or prostitution (not sure there is a difference). In any case, prostitution is illegal, so maybe it wasn't so stupid for this to be a big deal after all.

@revelette,
In the United States, laws vary from state to state. In those states where adultery is still on the statute book (although rarely prosecuted), penalties vary from life sentence (Michigan), to a fine of $10 (Maryland), to a Class I felony (Wisconsin). In the U.S. Military, adultery is a potential court-martial offense.

@Rockhead,
I wasn't aware of the specifics, but I knew there were outdated laws from way back when in some states.

Craziest Laws Still on the Books

Quote:
Not surprisingly, many of the antiquated statutes passed in the late 1800s and early 1900s were aimed at protecting the fairer sex from unwanted attention or less-than-flattering reputations. For example, an old city ordinance in Cleveland, Ohio prohibits women from wearing patent leather shoes in public. The reason? Shiny footwear could afford a nearby gentleman an unintentional peep show.

Chuckled on that one, but I am sure if a person wanted to they could look up all kinds of stupid laws made by well intentioned people. (one assumes well intentioned anyway..)

@Fido,
Let look at the morals of two of our founding fathers.

Ben Franklin was not in fact married to his "wife" but instead was in a common-law relationship with her as she was married to another man who had disappear.

Added to that he one day brought home a male infant he had father for his wife to help raised.

A. Hamilton had an affair with a married woman and was blackmail by her husband during the period he was the first Secretary of the Treasury.

Bout right... Honor to ones mate is no guarantee of morality, but it is a good indication of it..
