@Irishk,
Reacting to calls from non-governmental groups to expel Libya from the Human Rights Council which opens its next session on Monday, Fenniche said that "it is clear that the General Assembly could suspend a member of the council".
"It is up to all the states to act and to act quickly," he added. [Frej Fenniche is a representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.]

Shocked

It's crapfestival of you to call spendi smug and self-important, but when you mock him for his size, that's just going too far.

To chide RJB for taking himself and this thread too seriously, and the intent of your post is?

I didn't say military action. Why this is the first thing that comes to mind when I use the word "response" says more about you folk. In this thread we've talked much about how many states (the US keeps coming up) need to have a cohesive message on where they stand and to what degree violence and aggression is tolerated. Obama blew it in Egypt, and as things are escalating in other countries, they should take it as a teachable moment.

You're right, you didn't say "military action," I just assumed that you really weren't silly enough to think that "tough talk" or panty waisted economic sanctions could stop the bloodshed in Libya.

But wait, maybe if Obama insists on the UN getting butch, that will save lives.

BTW --- I can't believe you actually used the phrase "teachable moment!"

@Finn dAbuzz,
So, I checked his sig line, and you called him 'little'. That's odd, all things considered. Anyway, I've met John. As factual errors go, that one is big time.

Now, rjb will chide me for being off topic again. Can't win for losing.

The UN did issue a statement today. From the L.A. Times:

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke with longtime Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi on Monday, Reuters reported.

Ban had an extensive discussion with Kadafi, condemned the escalating violence in Libya and told him it "must stop immediately," a U.N. spokesman told Reuters.

Wow! He means business!

Dotn't you think it's a little late in the Day for the UN Human Rights Council to become concerned about the hypocrisy of its members ? I'm surprised that you give them any notice or credibility.

You do things because they are right, not because they are well received by a feckless global community of tyrants and tired Old Powers.

Obama could have used the same theme for a speech in a timely fashion.

Nonsense. Obama has already said the equivalent of Harper's comment. It is merely curious that some folks will praise a Canadian PM for saying what the U.S. President has already said, and in the next breath criticize the U.S. President. Again, empty threats of intervention don't help anyone.

@Irishk,
Clearly he is insane, which is why a tongue lashing from the US, the UN or his mother isn't going to stop him.

He's either going to find his way to his buddy Hugo Chavez' mansion or he is going to die in a pool of his own blood in Libya.

While world leaders issue emasculated statements, people in Libya die, but hey, better they die at the hands of their insane dictator, than as "collateral damage" in an effort by the West to bring them freedom.

DAMN !! I spluttered and nearly choked on THIS one. What degree of unawareness about yourself and others does it take to say that ? Presumably he believes it or expects others to believe it.

@georgeob1,
I would agree with that, Georgeob. Things move so fast now. The notion that the UN or the Arab League or any world leader can effectively do anything seems naive.
I read tonight the notion that Gaddafi may set fire to Libyan oil fields and open up the prisons on his way out. Plausible, I guess, but what could be done to prevent that? By whom?

A lady bigwig was on Newsnight who is the spokeswoman (a lovely word) for the 27 Euro members of some commission or other which is dealing with these matters. She was in Cairo. The traffic was flowing normally in the backdrop which I took the liberty of assuming wasn't a back projection of a film taken in happier times.

She was asked, three times, how many of the 27 wanted Gadaffi to stay in post.

She just would not answer it. I can't say I blame her mind you.

@georgeob1,
I don't think it's nonsense when most of us have not heard Obama speak on this issue; we have seen Clinton and Biden speak to this issue. If I missed Obama, that's because he's not said it often enough for Americans or others to hear it; most still believe Obama has not addressed Gaddafi.

I stand by my previous comment; Obama is poor at communicating where he stands on many issues, and it's not restricted to the Middle East.

The BBC is saying that eastern Libya is now under the control of the opposition, who they are I'm not sure, and that there is jubilation mixed with fear. The people now that either they fight to the death or live to regret their lives under a vengeful Gaddafi. They know he'll destroy the country and their livelihoods.

A seasoned journalist on Sky News' "Taking a Look at Tomorrow's Papers" feechewer just said that seasoned journalists when confronted with dramatic BREAKING NEWS start their considerations on how it will effect house prices.

Gadaffi does his nut, he explained, --oil price goes barreling upwards--inflation sets in- interest rates go up- people get skinter-house prices plummet. The silly sod is right there in your street, road, avenue, prospect and corniche. And on your bank statement.

He later opined that the only sane thing to do about bad news is to laugh at it. Which I assume means that taking it any differently causes your mouth to turn down at the corners and the rest of your facial muscles to set in a rictus which Cervantes called a "doleful countenance".

There's nothing like that on CBS or Fox.
