In your pocket, you have 7 pennies, 5 nickels, 8 dimes, and 3 quarters.
How many different ways can you make change for a dollar Question
NOTE: Just the total will suffice.

A farmer can dig a hole 8 feet square and 8 feet deep in 8 days.
How long will it take him to dig a hole 4 feet square and 4 feet deep Question

[size=7]Lizzie and the dollars---3+3*6=21
Farmer and the Hole---Farmer can move 64ft^3 per day and 4^3=64 ft^3----1 day

In America any boy may become President and I suppose it's just one of the risks he takes, but the thing that impresses me the most is the way parents obey their children.

Jo:

Change for a dollar

$1.67 Idea

Oh so very close, good try. Rolling Eyes

Thoh writes, "'i love lucy'"

Naturally I am very happy for you; but who the heck is Lucy?

I am a pig but where did I go wrong?

Mark comes to the rescue, "…you concatenated the numbers instead of multiplying them"

Keep it quiet will ya, I would rather be thought stupid than have you prove it! Embarrassed

Mark:

CHANGE FOR A DOLLAR
You can keep two of the pennies in your pocket. The answer is the coefficient of x^100 in the following product: Cool

(1+x^5) *
(1 + x^5 + x^10 + x^15 + x^20 + x^25) *
(1 + x^10 + x^20 + x^30 + x^40 + x^50 + x^60 + x^70 + x^80) *
(1 + x^25 + x^50 + x^75)

If that makes 21, rock on!

HOLE
A cube with double the dimensions has eight times the volume. Cool

(That is very true. However, in this case it is 1/8 the size of the large hole) Shocked

Therefore, it will take 64 days.

(I think you multiplied the numbers instead of concatenated them) Laughing

Rap:

Lizzie and the dollars---3+3*6=21 Cool

Farmer and the Hole---Farmer can move 64ft^3 per day and 4^3=64 ft^3----1 day Cool

Thank you Rap for your accurate and timely intervention. Very Happy

For those who have an enquiring mind; there are twenty-one different ways you can make change for a dollar with 7 pennies, 5 nickels, 8 dimes, and 3 quarters:

1…3 quarters + 2 dimes + 1 nickel + 0 pennies
2…3 quarters + 2 dimes + 0 nickels + 5 pennies
3... 3 quarters + 1 dime + 3 nickels + 0 pennies
4…3 quarters + 1 dime + 2 nickels + 5 pennies
5... 3 quarters + 0 dimes + 5 nickels + 0 pennies
6…3 quarters + 0 dimes + 4 nickels + 5 pennies
7…2 quarters + 5 dimes + 0 nickels + 0 pennies
8. ..2 quarters + 4 dimes + 2 nickels + 0 pennies
9. ..2 quarters + 4 dimes + 1 nickel + 5 pennies
10. 2 quarters + 3 dimes + 4 nickels + 0 pennies
11. 2 quarters + 3 dimes + 3 nickels + 5 pennies
12. 2 quarters + 2 dimes + 5 nickels + 5 pennies
13. 1 quarter + 7 dimes + 1 nickel + 0 pennies
14. 1 quarter + 7 dimes + 0 nickels + 5 pennies
15. 1 quarter + 6 dimes + 3 nickels + 0 pennies
16. 1 quarter + 6 dimes + 2 nickels + 5 pennies
17. 1 quarter + 5 dimes + 5 nickels + 0 pennies
18. 1 quarter + 5 dimes + 4 nickels + 5 pennies
19. 0 quarters + 8 dimes + 4 nickels + 0 pennies
20. 0 quarters + 8 dimes + 3 nickels + 5 pennies
21. 0 quarters + 7 dimes + 5 nickels + 5 pennies

12 members of the Riddles Thread were present at an A2K board meeting.

Each member shook hands with all of the other members before & after the meeting.

How many hand shakes were there Question

I get a lot of mail asking for a real easy question so they can get their name on the scoreboard. This one is so easy; even Jo could do it!

A clock loses 10 minutes each hour.
If the clock is set correctly at noon, what time is it when it reads 3 PM Question

Right, let's go over it again:

Three (3) hour time span.
Loss of ten (10) minutes each hour.

I leave the rest to you! Idea

Stay busy, get plenty of exercise, and don't drink too much. Then again, don't drink too little. Time is never wasted when you're wasted all the time. Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.

Slippy who was NOT one of those who wrote in; assisted with the TIME problem:

"Ever since that six fifths of a clock on the toque I've seen losing it"Mark:

HANDSHAKES
C(12,2)*2 = 132 Cool

For those who think that is an awful lot, think of it this way:

The first person shakes hands with 11 people, the second person also shakes hands with 11 people, but you may only have counted 10, because the hand shake with the first person was already counted. Then add 9 for the third person, 8 for the fourth, & so on. 66 hand shakes took place before & after the meeting, for a total of 132.

TIME
3:36 p.m. (same day) Cool

Just to make sure Slippy understands: Laughing

The clock loses 10 minutes each hour, so it loses 5 minutes every half-hour, and it loses 1 minute very 6 minutes.

It is 12:50 PM at 1:00 o'clock.
It is 1:40 PM at 2:00 o'clock.
It is 2:30 PM at 3:00 o'clock.
It is 2:55 PM at 3:30 o'clock.
It is 3:00 PM at 3:36 o'clock.

May I thank Stormy for her assistance. Razz
