I need Try Again!

A large fresh water reservoir has two types of drainage system. Small pipes and large pipes.

Six large pipes, on their own, can drain the reservoir in 12 hours. Six small pipes, on their own, can drain the reservoir in 18 hours.

How long will six large pipes and six small pipes take to drain the reservoir Question

Just a guess - but I'd say weight.

See Izzie? You don't have to worry about making a wrong guess because I am by far the flakiest person here. You will never look silly with me around!

Except that it is wrong! Rather than flatter you, Izzie, in an attempt to get you in the sack (watch out for Try - he's the devil, himself), I will attempt to explain the reasoning for the correct answer.

If the number of workers (women) is halved, then either the amount of work done (houses painted) will be halved or the time it takes to do the work will be doubled.

So, if we reduce the number of women from ten to five, then either:
1) they can paint 15 houses (half) in 60 days (same), or
2) they can paint 30 houses (same) in 120 days (double)

Welcome! and watch out. Do you own a chastity belt?

Hey Mark -

Very pleased to meet you too. Smile

Try was being a gentleman with my first question (OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh - I figured he was being kind to me - SO wish I'd got it right!!!!!!!!!!!!) but - I will keep trying here and one day - will get one right. Not a quitter these days.

(Don't worry about me - the belt is secure and has a combi lock on it - NOW - I know Try is good - no, correction - the best - but not even the TRYMASTER could work out that combination.)!!!!!

Now, Try Again - give me one of the those letter ones - I look at them and can see them usually. Please stay gentle.....fragile little thing me (HO HO HO as Santa would say!) Smile Yeah Right.

Miss mi:

BOAT

I'd say weight Cool

And you would be right! Very Happy

Mark:

PIPES
7 hours 12 minutes Cool Cool

The exact size of the pipes and reservoir does not matter. If we label the large pipes L, the small pipes S and if the reservoir has a total of T litres, then:

T / 6L = 12 which means L = T / 72 and T / 6S = 18 which means S = T / 108

We want:

T / (6L + 6S) = T / ((6 x T / 72) + (6 * T / 108)) = 7.2 hours = 7 hours and 12 minutes, just as Mark foretold! Shocked

"Watch out for Try - he's the devil, himself" Twisted Evil

Flattery will get you anywhere! Although to be fair, he is snow white compared to me. Even the sack bit was wrong; I have upgraded to an old horse hair mattress - classy! Laughing

The old wizard demanded much of his young apprentice. But when the wizard demanded he be brought a lock which is also a key, the apprentice felt she was certain to fail. The apprentice slunk back to her workstation.

Suddenly, inspiration struck and the old wizard had the object in his hands within moments.

What did the apprentice do Question

Good luck dudes; these are so impossible even I don't know the answer!
