Set Bill to x,
since Bill is half as old as Sam, then Sam = 2x,
since Sam is 3 times as old as Ted, then Ted = (2/3)x

x + 2x + (2/3)x = 55
multiply by 3 on both sides,
3x + 6x + 2x = 165
11x = 165
x = 15

So Bill is 15 years old, Sam is 30 years old and Ted is 10 years old. So I was right!!!
