Ok, the jury's back: Shocked

I wrote, "D= d1 + d2+ d3= 40+ 48+ 32=130 km Confused

The foreman of the jury wrote;

"Better get another calculator, Try: 40+ 48+ 32=120 km" Twisted Evil Laughing

So, apart from duff batteries 130 km proves my answer right. And 120 km proves ALL the rest of you right. That is the last time I deal in foreign numbers. Crying or Very sad Embarrassed

Mark:

A little help here please; today I made an ice sculpture, out in the open air, then the sun (yes, remember that) came out and it not surprisingly it began to melt.

Melting at rate of one-half its weight per hour. After 8 hours its weight is 5/16 lbs.

What was the original weight of the sculpture?

2^8 * 5/16 = 80 lbs.

Oh God here we go again:

Let W(t) denotes the weight at t hour, then

W(t) = (1/2) ^[t-1] W(0)
Therefore, W(8) = (1/2)^[8-1] W(0)

………………...=>(1/2)^7W(0)=5/16
………………...=>W(0) = (5/16) .2^7 =40lbs

Should I have doubled it somewhere along the line?

If there are 15 stairs and you can climb them either one at a time or two at a time only;

How many different ways can you climb the 15 steps?

C(15,0) + C(14,1) + C(13,2) + C(12,3) + C(11,4) + C(10,5) + C(9,6) + C(18,7) = 987 Cool Cool

Phew, we have a banker! Very Happy

What a flight; the Boeing 747 super jet left Los Angeles and flew with the wind for four hours, landing at Washington D.C. 2400 miles away.

Later I returned to Los Angeles in five hours over the same route and against the same wind.

What was the cruising speed of the jet And what was the wind speed?

J = 9W
4(J+W) = 2400
W = 60mph Cool
J = 540mph Cool

Don't make it look too easy.

There were three red flags, three blue flags, and three white flags. A signal is made by raising exactly three flags on a pole.

Each flag may be raised into one of four vertical positions on the pole. All three flags may be the same color, or there may be just two of the same color, or all three may be different colors.

How many different signals may be made under these conditions?

C(4,3) * [3 * (3!/3! + 3!/2! + 3!/2!) + 3!] = 108

I like it better when we agree, as my success rate when we don't is…Ok; poor. However, I'm feeling good about this one. Rolling Eyes

Choose a position.
C(4,1) = 4

One color:
C(3,1)=3

Two colors:
=9

Three colors:
C(3,) . 3! =6

Answer: 4(3+9+6) =72

That's with a new calculator; am I right, or am I right?

If not I maybe suffering from jet lag! Drunk

That was funny (the guy, not the fire) Laughing
Since firefighters wear protective masks so they don't inhale the smoke, I truly doubt that guy is a firefighter. If he
is a real firefighter and intentionally inhaled marijuana smoke, then he has some serious explaining to do.

Tryagain, start waving that white flag in a furious fashion.

There are 4 choose 3 slots for the flags. [(4x3x2)/(3x2x1)]=4
There are 3! ways the flags can be all different. (3x2x1)=6
There are 3 ways the flags can be all the same. =3
There are 3choose2x3! ways the flags can be mixed. =18

4x(6+3+18) = 108

You've got me wondering now, about the percentage of all numbers (to the nearest one percent) that contain the number 1?

Why t-1 instead of t?

I misinterpreted the the allowable combinations. I assumed any combination of the three colors was permissible.

I am up early this morning as I have to find my truck which I abandoned after I fell in with a crowd of crack whore junkies. Oh what fun we had as we (*=>*) the night away. Now, who has got my keys?

Mark modestly wrote about his trip to London, which was an exciting thing to do. However, it now appears that was the tip of the iceberg, as he failed to mention, he also went to Paris, Rome, Capri, Sorrento, Delphi, and Athens. Cool Cool Cool

Wow! That is just FANTASTIC, a vacation of a lifetime. We demand pictures.

ICE SCULPTURE

Why indeed; there was a good reason at the time, however that time has passed.

I think this was a sneaky question poised by Epen:

"You've got me wondering now, about the percentage of all numbers (to the nearest one percent) that contain the number 1?"

One might expect it to be; one digit out of 9!

But, and it is a big BUTT; Confusion reigns, I will go for 30%

TTH:

Counting my x's

54-35=19
19x6=114
114+87=201

Just one minute while I check….

6(x - 35) + 87
___________ = 67
……..3

6x -210 +87 = 201
6x -123 =201
6x =324
x = 54

Actually I misread the problem and quessed at a number that was lower than 35. It took 3 guesses to come up with the right number. When I went to post my calculation is when I realized the mistake I made so I just added the correctly guessed number to 35. It still worked though Embarrassed Laughing

I have found that if you print similes, the system sometimes prints the out as little faces. Same difference!

Two and three is Nevada

I have gotten into a right mess with all these flags here:

If the ratio of the number of reds to the number of greens was 1 to 4, how many were red and how many were green Question

As the length of allowable numbers approaches infinity, the probability of a randomly selected number containing a one approaches 1 (100%).

Therefore, the percentage is 100, but not all numbers contain a one. Sounds paradoxical, but that's because the set of numbers is infinite.

65% of all positive integers of length up to 10 digits contain a one.
Nearly 88% of all positive integers of length up to 20 digits contain a one.
99.9% of all positive integers of length up to 66 digits contain a one.
