Thoh:

A certain investment doubles Thoh's money every five years. If Thoh leaves all the money invested, in 40 years he'll have 384,000.

a) How long will it take to have $340,000 if he starts with twice as much money
b) How much money did he start with

a) 5 years less, or 35 years. Cool
b) 40/5=8 n*2^8=340000. n= 1328.125 Arrow

Think of it this way; in the first scenario he has twice as much in 5 years, leaving 35 more to reach $384,000. He started with $1,500 : 384,000 = x (original investment) + 2x + 4x + 8x + 16x + 32x + 64x + 128x or 256x, thus 384,000/256 = 1,500.

One of us is righter than the other, however it is not a bad investment, better start saving.

TTH:

"Â…the answer to the card question is a slim chance" Cool

You got that right!

"What I did was to take 720/3=240/2=120 to get tth's weight, then 120 x 2= 240 to get thoh's weight and last 120 x 3 to get marks weight. Will this apply to the same type of problems or was it just a coincidence?"

It's no coincidence, the same system works to keep your skin soft and whiten your teeth etc. Laughing

"What is the probability that Tryagain is even close to all our weights?"

I got the data straight from Weight Watchers Inc. However if the numbers are metric, please accept my apologies.

Mark (I'll stay up as late as I please):

The probability of an event is the number of favorable outcomes divided by the number of possible outcomes. We need to know the number of 13-card hands with no card higher than a 10 and the total number of 13-card hands. Cool

Assuming aces are low, the former is C(40,13) which is the number of combinations of 40 things (ace-ten in four suits) taken 13 at a time. The latter is C(52,13) which is the number of combinations of 52 things (the whole deck) taken 13 at a time. So, the answer to Try's question is C(40,13)/C(52,13). Cool

What the hell is C(n,r) you might ask. Good question. It is n! / [(n-r)! * r!) where n! = 1 * 2 * 3 * 4 * ... * n.

So, the answer is 12033222880 / 635013559600 = 0.01895 which is slightly less than 2%. Anything less than 2% is considered slim, so you were right!!! Shocked Razz Cool

Aces low! Shocked What are you playing, snap? Needless to say I assumed aces were high; thus:

First, we must determine how many different ways that 13 cards can be chosen from 52. This would represent the number of ALL possible bridge hands, which turns out to be 635,013,559,600. Now we must determine how many ways 13 cards can be chosen from the 36 cards that are 10 or lower. This turns out to be 2,310,789,600. Now dividing this number into the previous number we obtain the probability of .003638961035 or about 1 in 275.

ANOTHER METHOD
The probability that the first card dealt is a 10 or lower is 36/52. The probability of the next card being a 10 or lower is 35/51 and so on. This results in a thirteen fraction equation where probability equals

36*35*34*33*32*31*30*29*28*27*26*25*24
52*51*50*49*48*47*46*45*44*43*42*41*40

which equals .003638961035.... or about 1 in 275. Pretty good agreement.

Thus proving dark chocolate is good for the brain.

"What's plan B in case this site goes down and stays down?"

We all go round to TTH's mansion, sit round the pool and discuss the matter in greater detail. Drunk

Mark can solve 32 math riddles per hour while painting ?'our' car, and his friend TTH takes three hours to solve the same number, whilst painting her nails. If they both work on them, (that's the riddles, not her nails) how long will it take for them to solve 32 math riddles Question

An employee at A2K is to be rewarded with a $250 bonus AFTER TAXES have been deducted, for keeping this site going for 3.75 minutes without a crash. Rolling Eyes

If the federal tax is 15%, the state tax is 10% and the Social Security is 7.5 % what must the GROSS PAY be in order for the net payout to be $250 Question

The color of the car reminds me of:

Lyrics to Purple People Eater.

Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye.
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple people eater to me.

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater.
(one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed one-horned, flyin' puple people eater
Sure looks stange to me. (one eye?)

Well he came down to earth and lit in a tree
I said Mr. Purple People Eater don't eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn't eat you cuz you're so tough

It was a one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (one horn?)

I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line
He said it's eatin' purple people and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band

Well bless my soul, rock and roll,
flying purple people eater.
Pidgeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin'
purple people eater (we wear short shorts)
Flyin' purple people eater
sure looks strange to me.

And then he swung from the tree and lit on the
ground. He started to rock, really rockin' around
It was a crazy little ditty with a swingin' tune
(sing aboop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom)
Well, bless my soul, rock and roll
flyin' purple people eater.

Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple peopleeater.
Flyin' little people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (purple people?)
And then he went on his way, and then what do
you know. I saw him last night on a TV show.
He was blowing it out, a'really knockin' em dead
Playin' rock and roll music through the horn in
his head (clarinet solo) ( Tequila)

Sorry to disappoint you- no mansion, no pool. I kinda like small and cozy Smile
Oh yeah, I do not do my nails either. I do yard work so they tend to break.

Solving riddles. Well if TTH was smart she would just sit back and let Mark solve the riddles, but apparently she wants to be nice and help Mark so
Mark can do 32 per hr. TTH can do 10.667?? per hr. Twisted Evil
32+10.667=42.667 per hour /60 minutes=.7111 riddles per minute
32/.7111= 45 minutes (I hope)

T/1 + T/3 = 1
T = 3/4 = 45 minutes (TTH has misled us to believe that she is not a mathematician)

BONUS
$370.37

INVESTMENT
Try is correct. 384000 = n*2^8, n = 1500

Who came up with this? It is called the grossed up amount.
.15+.1+.075=.325
100-.325=.675
250/.675=370.37
$370.37 would be the gross pay. (BTW this is keeping me from doing the quarterlys and year end payroll ya know Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes)

My degree is not in math, but I got my BA from Central Washington University.
Why? Is my math that bad? Actually, I would not say my math is that bad. I just always did math my way (it made more sense sometimes than the way it was taught).

I wasn't making fun of your math. You've been avoiding the math problem, but now you're on a roll.

Has the potential calamity been averted?

Aviation problem: A plane travels at a speed of 400 miles per hour for 1200 miles, and then returns by the same route at a speed of 300 miles per hour.

What is the average speed for the total trip Question

We know little about Try except that he first lived about the year 38 B.C. (That is C.E. to you tree huggers.) Due to one chronicler who described his life by the means of an algebraic riddle (math brain teaser), we know at least something about his sordid life of Sodom and Gomorrah. Twisted Evil

Try's youth lasted 1/6 of his life. He had his first beard in the next 1/12 of his life. At the end of the following 1/7 of his life Try got married. Five years from then his son was born. His son lived exactly 1/2 of Try's life. Try died 4 years after the death of his son, Troy.

How long did Try live Question

And will he ever get to drive that race car!

What is the average speed for the total trip Question

total distance: 2400 miles
1st leg is 3 hrs, 2nd leg is 4 hrs so total time is 7 hrs
average: total distance/total time = 2400 miles/7hrs = 342.86 mph

Try was 84 years old when he kicked the bucket.
x/6 + x/12 + x/7 + 5 + x/2 + x/2 + 4 = x
25x/28 + 9 = x
x = 84 years

38 B.C. (That is C.E. to you tree huggers.)

I believe it's B.C. (before Christ) => B.C.E. (before Common Era) & A.D. (Anno Domini) => C.E. (Common Era) Razz
