The last person that gave Try credit had to haul his butt into small claims court to receive payment. Unfortunately, after the judgment against him, Try fled the country (with the guy's wife) until the statute of limitations expired. The poor schmuck that gave him credit is still out the $15 (and his wife). I'd think twice before giving Try credit.

Laughing Laughing Laughing I could not resist sorry, not really, but it sounded good.

Late as usual Stormwatch got the answer first. Nice job Stormwatch. Mark told me Tryagain is a guy so we have to keep him in line. There is something awful cute about blue. I think you would have to agree. Very Happy

I apologize for using your thread for chit chat Tryagain, but I wanted to tell Stormwatch I think her avatar is pretty and I like it better than the other one she used. I think you should keep it Stormwatch, but that is only my opinion.

Mark and Try want to paint a wall - the same wall. Mark wants it to be taupe but Try wants it to be mauve. Mark can paint the wall by himself in one hour but Try takes two hours (sorry Try). Try, knowing he can't win, wants to make Mark's job as hard as possible. So they start painting at the same time. Try even paints over Mark's taupe with his mauve (which Mark will have to repaint). Within what range of times will the wall be completely toupe?

If Try is smart, he can make it take two hours. If he's dumb, Mark can still finish in one hour.

smart: he only paints over Mark's work
dumb: he only paints where Mark hasn't painted

My answer:

In the worst case scenario, Mark and Try start painting from the same corner. Mark paints the wall taupe in one hour, but by that time, Try has painted over half of Mark's paint with mauve. Now Mark has an extra half a wall to paint in half an hour, at which point Try adds 1/4th of a wall to repaint again. Then 1/8th, 1/16th, and so on. The wall gets painted taupe in 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + ... = 2hrs.

In the best case scenario, Mark and Try start painting from opposite corners. In 40 minutes (2/3 hr) they meet, when Mark has painted 2/3rds of the wall taupe and Try painted 1/3rd mauve. Now Mark has to paint 1/3rd of the wall, but Try starts painting on Mark's taupe (since he's been credited with not mindlessly repainting his own mauve). This adds 1/6th of the wall for Mark, and later 1/12th, and so on. The wall gets painted taupe in 2/3 + 1/3 + 1/6 + 1/12 + ... = 1 1/3 hrs or 1 hr 20 min.

So the wall will be paited between 1 hr 20 min and 2 hrs.

Coins: If one is not a nickel, the other is a .50 cent piece Razz (I collect coins & bills BTW)
Dog: The dog= 1/2, then he or she is running out of the woods not into. Razz

Tryagain, If you haven't noticed, I kind of skip the math ones because that requires me to actually think. It is not that I am not capable of doing them, it is just that I try not to think too hard if I do not have to. Very Happy

COINS: One is a half-dollar, the other is a nickel.

TRIP: You have to make the second half in 0 time, so infinately fast.

FOREST: The dog can run into the woods half way - any further and he's running out of the woods.

One could argue that running into the forest lasts but an instant as the dog crosses the border of the forest. Once in the forest, what defines whether the dog is running in or out?

I thought that was TTH I saw at the betting window at the dog track. She was involved in a heated discussion. Amidst the shouting, I heard the word bitch. I don't know if one was referring to the other or to one of the contestants in the previous race. I kept sweeping and pretended not to notice.

So, markr trying to be difficult are ya? If the dog ran 1/2 into the woods he is 1/2 in. If he just ran a few feet into the woods and turned aroung to leave then I can understand your point. The sentence said 1/2, which means he is into the woods that far. Leave out 1/2 and I would agree with you. Once he is 1/2 in he has no choice but to just sit there or come out of the woods.

I'd say the dog is half in when its front paws are in, but its rear paws and tail are out.

Hey, it might have been you. After all, we're practically neighbors - we both live south of Seattle.

We'll have to let Try judge this. I don't like my chances. He usually sides with the skirt.

We do not have a dog track here and I don't bet on dogs. I rather bet on things I know I will win at. Razz
