MAGIC SQUARE Cool Cool Cool
37 9 29
17 25 33
21 41 13

Let x, c, y, w, and m represent the numbers in the five missing cells as follows:
37 9 x
c y w
21 m 13

Then, since the 3 numbers in each row must be the same, equate the top row and the upward diagonal to find y:
21 + y + x = 37 + 9 + x
Therefore y = 25.
Find w in a similar manner:
13 + w + x = 37 + 9 + x
So w = 33.

Since y = 25, the magic sum is 75 (37 + 25 + 13)

Then x = 29, c = 17, and m = 41.

nina + pinta + santa maria = ships of columbus Cool
1 + 6 zeros = 1 million Cool
boy or girl - father - mother = orphan (good one!) Cool

Not good enough to confound you it would seemÂ… Laughing

Until now!!! Today the most difficult Riddle - ever! Twisted Evil

Months in the making, it may never be solved:

An old rope over the top of a rail has the same length on each side, and weighs one-third of a pound per foot. On one end hangs a Minkey (he is French) holding a ruler, and on the other end a weight equal to the weight of the said Minkey. The ruler weighs 2 ounces per inch. The length of the rope in feet is the same as the age of the Minkey, and the weight of the Minkey in ounces is as much as the age of the Minkey's mother. The combined ages of the Minkey and its mother are 30 years.

One-half the weight of the Minkey, plus the weight of the ruler is one-fourth the sum of the weights of the rope and the weight. The Minkey's mother is one-half as old as the Minkey will be when it is three times as old as its mother was when she was one-half as old as the Minkey will be when it is as old as its mother will be when she is four times as old as the Minkey was when it was twice as old as its mother was when she was one-third as old as the Minkey was when it was as old as its mother was when she was three times as old as the Minkey was when it was one-fourth as old as it is now.

How long is the ruler Question

Dagnabbit!

Let A = age of the minkey now and
let M = age of his Mother.
Then A + M = 30.
From the long sentence,
M = .5(3(.5(4(2((1/3)(3(.25A))))))
Solving simultaneously, 2.5 A = 30
so A = 12 (the age of the minkey) and
M = 18 (the age of the minkey's mother).

So the weight of the minkey is 18 oz.
The length of the rope is 12 feet.
The rope weighs 2 pounds.
The weight weighs 18 ounces.
The ruler weighs 11.5 ounces, so the ruler is 5.75 inches long.

A rose is a rose is a rose. Cool

Abraham Lincoln & James Garfield & William McKinley & John Kennedy were all assassinated Cool

(A.L. & John Glenn & William McCool & Joseph Kerwin were all astronauts)
That is very clever, I wonder if there ever was an A.L.?

Welcome to the Forum Thoh13, although not correct this time, I think you will become a force to be reckoned with.

In Canada lived two and only two groups of people, DOMEN and LEYMEN. The Domen were incurable liars who never told the truth. The Leymen were incapable of telling a lie.
A stranger, visiting in this land, asked three natives of the country to which groups they belonged;

The first man said something the visitor did not hear.
The second said, "He said he is a Leyman."
The third man immediately retorted, "The first man is a liar because he is a Doman."

How many Domen and how many Leymen are there among the three natives Question

Can you tell which ones are Leymen and which ones are Domen Question

Then the second part of the quiz is All the States to form the P. of S.
The second part is Senate + House of Rep. = United States Constitution

[size=8]CANADIANS
The first man would say Leyman whether or not it is true.
Therefore, the second man is a Leyman.
If the third man is a Leyman, then the first man is a Doman.
If the third man is a Doman, then the first man is a Leyman.

There are two Leymen and one Doman. The second is a Leyman. It cannot be determined which of the others is a Leyman.

Hiya Lenny how's your Llamas? Welcome to the forum, I like your riddle:

"Dang, this went from A history Lesson, all the way to a Math Quiz. Why does life have to be so cruel?"

Don't a day go by, I don't ask the same question. Laughing

"Then the second part of the quiz is All the States to form the P. of S.
The second part is Senate + House of Rep. = United States Constitution" (As Mark points out, Congress, not Constitution)

But close enough to win a cigar. Cool

There is no improving on that answer.

A Pop concert starts in 17 minutes and the group members must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight.

A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either one or two people, must have the flashlight to see. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace, based on this information:

Bono - 1 minute to cross
Edge - 2 minutes to cross
Adam - 5 minutes to cross
Larry - 10 minutes to cross

For example, if Larry and Bono walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes will have passed and you will have failed.

Can you suggest how this seemingly impossible feat may be achieved Question

x, y, a can not = 0

To solve: Multiply the top equation by 2 and the bottom equation by 5. Adding will eliminate the term with 10a/y in it.
Then solve for x in terms of a.
