The ^ symbols are pointing to relevant locations in the puzzle on the preceding line. The dots are just to get them aligned correctly.

pittsburgh/seattle was a shot at Try

Xbehind: is that a puzzle?
behind the times

I assume this is a puzzle:

Super Bowl XL free zone - where we don't mention the result.

Trust DP to get all the easy ones…except

ro
ot = square root!

Rap:
House painting
12 hrs
1/t=1/30+1/20=2/60+3/60=5/60
t=60/5=12

If I may be so bold as to explain in Australian:
Mark can paint at a rate of 1/20th of a house per hour.
Rap can paint at a rate of 1/30th of a house per hour.
Combine their efforts and they can paint 1/20 + 1/30 = 1/12th of a house in an hour.

So if their rate is 1/12th of a house per hour it will take 12 hours to paint an entire house.

Invading country

Using a bivariate probability function P(x,y)
x by sea, y by sea P(x,y)=0.8
x by sea, y by land P(x,y)=1.0
x by land, y by sea P(x,y)=1.0
x by land, y by land P(x,y)=0.6
The Motto of my clan, the MacDonald of the isles is "Per mare per terras" by land and by sea
except in this case its not an ?'and' its an ?'or'

so xs=1-xl and yx=1-yl
P(x,y)=0.8xs*ys+1.0xs(1-ys)+1.0(1-xs)ys+0.6(1-xs)(1-ys)
P(x,y)=0.4xs+0.4ys-0.6xs*ys-.06
To optimize xs and ys set dP(x,y)=0
And
dP(x,y)=dP(x,y)/dx*dx/dy+dP(x,y)/dy*dy/dx=0
since dP(x,y)/dx <>0 and dP(x,y)/dy<>0 then
dy/dx and dx/dy=0
dys/dxs=0=-0.6xs+0.4 so xs=2/3
dys/dxs=-0.6ys+0.4 and ys=2/3
so country x should assume that the probability of country x is going to invade by sea is 2/3
and country y should assume that the probability of country y is going to defend by sea is 2/3
Putting these values into P(x,y)
P(x,y)=0.6(1-2/3)(1-2/3)+(2/3)(1-2/3)+1(1-2/3)(2/3)+0.8(2/3)(2/3)=7.8/9=78/90=(2*3*13)/(2*5*3*8)=13/15
So if both sides optimize their strategies the probability of country x successfully invading country is 13/15.

Don't mess with Rap - Best answer ever!

"MacDonald of the isles"

One of the most interesting and intriguing periods of Scottish/British history.

Mark:

T/20 + T/30 = 1
5T = 60
T = 12

INVASION
We're looking for an equilibrium.
Xs is the frequency of attacking by sea
Ys is the frequency of defending the sea

From X's perspective:
if Y defends the sea, the payout is .8Xs + (1-Xs)
if Y defends the land, the payout is Xs + .6(1-Xs)

Since we're looking for an equilibrium, these must be equal.
Therefore:
.8Xs + (1-Xs) = Xs + .6(1-Xs)
Xs = 2/3

From Y's perspective:
if X attacks by sea, the payout is -.8Ys - (1-Ys)
if X attacks by land, the payout is -Ys - .6(1-Ys)

Again, these must be equal.
Therefore:
-.8Ys - (1-Ys) = -Ys - .6(1-Ys)
Ys = 2/3

They should each roll a die, and attack/defend by/the sea if they roll greater than a 2.

The probability of a successful invasion is:
(.8 * 2/3 * 2/3) + (1 * 1/3 * 2/3) + (1 * 2/3 * 1/3) + (.6 * 1/3 * 1/3)
= 16/45 + 10/45 + 10/45 + 3/45
= 39/45
= 13/15

Most impressive.

RIDDLE

CRIME
Since I'll be indifferent, the set the probability of my testifying to .5.
Therefore, the expected sentences are:
His:
10(.5p) + 20(.5(1-p)) + 0 + 3(.5(1-p))
= 5p + 10 - 10p + 1.5 - 1.5p
= 11.5 - 6.5p

Mine:
10(.5p) + 0 + 20(.5p) + 3(.5(1-p))
= 5p + 10p + 1.5 - 1.5p
= 1.5 + 13.5p

I'm indifferent if
11.5 - 6.5p = 2(1.5 + 13.5p)
8.5 = 33.5p

p = 17/67

The way I see it: If you confess, there is probability p of two confessions and (1-p) probability that only you implicate your partner. If you don't confess there is probability p that neither of you implicate each other and a (1-p) probability that only you are implicated. Let s donate one unit of suffering. One year in jail yourself would cause you 2 units of suffering, and one year of your partner serving would cause you 1 unit of suffering.
The table below shows the total suffering given the four possibilities:

Your partner
-----------------------
confess not confess

Y confess: 10*2+10=30 0+20=20
o
u not confess: 2*20+0=40 2*3+3=9

So given the probability p of your partner confessing if you confess the expected, or average, amount of suffering would be 30p + 20(1-p)=10p+20. If you don't confess the expected amount of suffering would be 40p + 9(1-p)=31p+9. To find the indifference point equate the two expressions:
10p+20 = 31p+9
11 = 21p
p=11/21 =~ 52.4%.
Thus if you think your partner's probability of confessing is greater than 11/21 = ~ 52.4%.you should confess, otherwise you should keep your mouth shut.
