Is there anything other than too may regenerations that would make a softener use too mcuh salt?

What is the SALT portion of your timer set at? 6, 8 ??

i have the same problem, which knob tells me the salt portion?

@H2O MAN,
I noticed that the tank is keeping water and it is not clean. I filled the tank with salt a week ago and the salt is almost gone. The timer was replaced not too long ago and at that time, a tune up was made. The unit is about 8 years old. I even noticed the water from the faucet is a bit salty.

It could be the O rings on the piston and brine injector, the shut off tabs or the index lever.
