Possible virus?

OK, I've somehow managed to start my Internet this time. I might not get lucky the second time, so I'm going to post this problem now.

I switched my lappy off after making some post on A2k, and went for dinner. I switched it back after the meal, and what I see is that some software called HDD Low is prompting me to have hard drive scans. It' prompts also seem to be masqueraded as Windows alerts.

Everytime I try to open up my Internet, I get a prompt saying something along the lines of that my hard disc is screwed, etc. I can't seem to "exit" or uninstall this software.

Does it make sense? Let me know if you want me to more specific. Could it really be a hard disc issue?

@spidergal,
Sounds like malware.
Maybe this will help.

@spidergal,
Do a search on the exact wording of the message you are getting. That should point you to something that will confirm it is a virus or tell you what else it might be. Also, check how much room is left on your hard drive.

The last time that something like that happened to me,
I made a point of NOT clicking on anything.

I just turned off the computer for a while.

When I turned it back on, no problem remained.

@spidergal,
It's a virus.

Here's some info on how to get rid of it:

You can use Malwarebytes Antimalware, SUPERAntispyware and Hitman Pro. All these programs are free and safe to use. I think you should also use TDSSKiller.

TDSSKiller http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/sol
Hitman Pro http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
SUPERAntispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes Antimalware http://malwarebytes.org/

I second (or third) that suggestion.

Malwarebytes and SUPERAntispyware are most likely the tools you need. And you should run them in SAFE mode, if you can boot into safe mode. If you cannot boot into safe mode, you should figure out what you need to do to boot into safe mode.

Absolutely NEVER click on any of the pop-up windows -- just move them out of the way.

@OmSigDAVID,
For the record, I was intending to respond to Spidergal's problem. But, yes, you should download and run those programs too, David.

@spidergal,
HDD Low creates the following registry entries:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “[RANDOM CHARACTERS].exe”
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “[RANDOM CHARACTERS]”
