Researching a new book?

I remember our travels in Vietnam and Costa Rica and the three weeks I spent driving 5,000 miles throughout Oregon and Washington this summer researching a new book.

What does research mean here? Did the author want to collect materials for his new book or just want to travel to examine a new book (to see whether the book was correct or not?).
BYW the author of this passage is a writer of travel articles.

@Nancy88,
The writer is researching all these places presumably for a book he plans to write. Most likely places he thinks are worthy of people to stay, eat or see.
