Collectors -- should I keep the box?

I found these super cool model airplanes at Goodwill the other day. They're still in the box with all the packaging. They were pretty cheap so I thought they'd made good stocking stuffers for Mo since he loves military stuff.

Out of curiosity I looked them up online and it turns out that these things are expensive. They are from "Collection Armour" by the Franklin Mint.

I found this one that is listed for $98.00 on eBay:

And this one on a airplane site for $139.00:

I'm not really interested in collecting airplanes and I want Mo to play with them without worrying about them. But what if they turn out to be worth something someday? I know it's better if you have the box.

So.... should I keep the boxes and stryofoam or is this the kind of thing that really doesn't ever increase in value so the packaging won't matter?

Thanks!

Oh yeah, the packaging can mean from a 10% to 25% increase in the price you will get for an item. If they are not collector's items now, they will be someday, and the packaging will make a big difference.

Now, if the boy is going to play with them, rather than just displaying them, they may get beat up enough that they will lose their value.

That P38 Lockheed Lightening is uber-cool . . . but probably isn't really worth that kind of money . . . you could just ship it to me, and i can dispose of it for you . . .

@Setanta,
Maybe you can come over and play with us!

They really are beautiful models but I don't want to send the message that he can't play with them. (My FIL gave him a cool model car a few years ago but told him he couldn't play with it. Oh the humanity!) Plus, I found them for really cheap ($35 for both) so it's not like I made a big investment. They don't look like they've ever been out of the box.

But okay. I'm going to stick the boxes in the attic just in case!

@chai2,
I'm sort of with Chai here, except I would tell Mo they are the kind of toys you collect and don't trash. Buy him something he can have fun with and he can learn about investing too.

@chai2,
Believe me, I thought about it when I saw what they were selling for.

But he'd like these as much as anything else I could buy him.

@Green Witch,
He takes pretty good care of his toys -- especially the military toys and memorabllia he has.

But telling him to be careful with them wouldn't hurt!
