@spidergal,
Now, wait a minute. There are two things you might mean by 'quote function'. If you use the quote button instead of reply, the whole post goes into a quote box with attribution. If you copy stuff, highlight it and hit the quote button above the reply box, the stuff goes into a quote box, but without attribution - unless you mean the post reference. That is, you get the same post reference that you always get when using the reply button. I bet you used one or the other. If not, it still happens that using preview can produce a box around everything, but I'm not sure it does it in every case.

I'm not sure that is clear to anyone but myself.

I've been noticing that.

Mind if I quote you?

Well, I'll be.
I've never noticed that quote feature.

I could see where it could come in handy.

@spidergal,
Sure!

On the thread page, the buttons are "Reply", "Quote, and "Report". Just pick "Quote" and the entire post, including any quotes it contains show up in your reply. You can add comments above or below the quote box. You can also delete material within the box that you don't want to argue with - just be careful to not change the meaning of what you quote.

@chai2,
Get outta here, chai, and don't come back pretending I'm trying to limit your right to post, either.

@roger,
I don't know what you meant by "thread page", but I only see "reply" and "report" on all posts.

Maybe "quote" is not available in my part of the world?!

@spidergal,
OH! Go to the bottom of the page and find the option labeled 'My Preferences'. On the preferences page, change the option on the Show Quote Button to YES.

I couldn't tell if you were pulling my leg, or not. I had no doubt about chai2.

Go there. Do it now. I don't have any idea why they even made the button an option.

@roger,

there's a reason Show Quote Button is defaulted to off, has to do with the way replies are linked to the post being replied to...

@Region Philbis,
That's not clear to me, so I guess I'll just put it down as "more of that computer stuff".

@roger,

see that blue @Region Philbis text in your post?
that's a link to the post above that you replied to...

i don't see the need to quote an entire post, but understand why some do it.
at times i'll quote a part of a post to address a specific portion therein.

also, if my reply goes to the next page, i usualy go back and edit in a quote of the post i replied to...

@spidergal,
That's what I thought. Now Chai, well, I've known her sense of humor for years.
