Is there such a thing as no thing?

Hi All!

Is there such a thing as no thing.

If not a thing is a thing it can't be not a thing because, in being a thing it must have properties, and is therefore a thing, not, not a thing.

Do you agree or disagree with this?

Thank you, and have a lovely afternoon!
Mark...

Yes. It is Leonard, but no one knows it.

@kennethamy,
If it has a name/description, it's a thing.

@CalamityJane,
Laughing I thought they were still in a back room somewhere trying to find moderators that actually knew what philosophy is. Laughing

Maybe it gets harder to find out what Philosophy is not...In your case I would suggest to look under a rock, who knows you might get enlightened...

Gresham's law also applies to philosophy forums. Bad philosophy drives out good.

Gosh, lighten up, Fil, we were joking. The emoticons should have been an indication, if not the writing.

@kennethamy,
Right kennethamy, philosophy is only as good as its fellow philosophers!
Whereas I have to say that a great deal of what you might think are good
philosophers (from your old forum) are just quixotic contemporaries.

A2k never was a sole philosophy forum, there is a small section dedicated to it
and you all could have made an impact to make it bigger and more interesting.
Instead, most of you sulkily retrieved to other stomping grounds. Not that
there is anything wrong with that, yet, every topic is only as interesting as
its posts.

Will I find you there even if the rock is not really a rock?

@Intrepid,
I was already in bed checking this on my smart phone but I felt the urge to apologise...indeed there is so much demagoguery flying around that it turns easy to miss some good sense of humour. Wink

C Jane and Intrepid I very much would enjoy your company around the philosophy Threads just to freshen up a little bit...

See you around !

@CalamityJane,
I have the impression that there are some "diamonds" rolling deep in the middle of the major nonsense as it is usual in democratic forums...it pays off to read them just to get that...in average not that bad.
Would be a little bit naive to expect better...

@Fil Albuquerque,
I agree, Fil, and thank you for the invite. I consider myself too pragmatic to
be philosophical, but I shall try...

Now, while it is morning in your part of the world in my part it is bedtime!
Good night!

Wrong.
The present king of France, is a description of a purported thing which does not exist. ie. the present king of France is not a thing.
That planet which accounts for the irrregular orbit of Mercury, acccording to newtonian pysics, was named "Vulcan", and it has been shown that 'it' does not exist. Therefore your "If it has a name/description, it's a thing." is false!

Does 'God' exist ..simply because "God" is a name...I don't think so.

@Owen phil,
Even when it doesn't physically exist, naming anything gives it identity. It's a "thing" in our mind. You proved it by describing it.
