Might be of some interest:
This page from a German advent calendar company presents information on the origins of advent calendars and a short history of their evolution from simple chalk lines marking off the days in December until Christmas to paper calendars with windows. The online Advent Calendar Museum provides photographs of calendars from the 1940s through 1960s. Also includes a brief history of the Sellmer Company in Stuttgart and an online tour of calendar production.

and while you're waiting for that to appear - here are my little friends with attitude on my Christmas sofa (this is about as Christmassy as things are going to get here this year)
Schneeflöckchen, Weißröckchen,
da kommst du geschneit;
Du kommst aus den Wolken,
dein Weg ist so weit.
Komm setz dich ans Fenster,
du lieblicher Stern;
malst Blumen und Blätter,
wir haben dich gern.
Schneeflöckchen, du deckst uns
die Blümelein zu,
dann schlafen sie sicher
in himmlischer Ruh'.
Schneeflöckchen, Weißröckchen,
komm zu uns ins Tal,
dann bau'n wir 'nen Schneemann
und werfen den Ball.
Ooh, must've missed that one, Walter. . . ;-)
Thanks, Beth. . . I think yours are a little more suitable to my tastes than those to which Walter alluded. . . <g>

I'm never going to go visit the Markt's, but I'm a sucker for the pix!
No. 2 son and his girlfriend work in a Christmas market in Munich on the weekends. They sell decorative glass panels for a local artisan. Thanks for the link, Beth.
I miss the Christkindlmakt in Nurnberg, and especially the Gluwein! Nothing says Christmas cheer quite like wine heated to the point it aerosolizes to enter the bloodstream faster!

I suppose, Felix Hoffmann of "Farbenfabriken vorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co." invented ASPIRIN after an evening with Glühwein at the christmas market.
hobitbob : try making your own GLUEHWEIN. when it gets really cold and blustery here along lake ontario, mrs. h. and i often make our own GLUEHWEIN. this will get you started : a good, full-bodied redwine (don't use cheap wine !), sugar, cinnamon-sticks, any other spices you might like(cardamon is nice), heat but do not boil, a nice preheated mug and bob's your uncle; add some boiling water if you don't like it full-strength. here we can also buy are german, non-alcoholic mix in a bottle; haven't tried it, prefer the homebrew. have some genuine dutch butter speculaas with it, also dutch or german honeycake(BUTTERED !) and dutch or german pepper-cookies are nice. this should keep you nice and warm ! hbg.
