Gutter on metal roof in snow country?

Have a 10/12 pitch over the entry. Has been suggested that snow coming off the roof would tear the gutters off. I've already put up snow guards. Can we just make sure the front of the gutter is slightly below the level of the roof deck/pitch and expect it to last? Or would you suggest we avoid a gutter altogether?
