@tsarstepan,
I like to thank the science journalists at CSMonitor.com for all of those great astronomy articles and the lovely people at http://www.spaceweather.com/ and I like to thank the Academy for believing in me through all of the good and bad years. Crying or Very sad

Trying to look objectively at it now, I'd probably guess a button hole on a crinkled silk shirt.

@littlek,
Or sea urchin? I should post it to Roberta's "Beautiful Animals" thread and see what they come up with.

@roger,
Roger, I don't think this belongs on the beautiful animals thread. I don't think it's a part of an animal. I think it's an astronimical something. A sun spot? Botanical? Part of a flower?

That is what came to mind as soon as I read the suggestion to post it there. Especially since it had already been established that it was a sun spot.

@Roberta,
Yep. Sunspots Roberta.

Quote:
Sunspot: A temporary concentration in the magnetic field on the sun, where convection of hot matter from the sun's interior is inhibited, resulting in a cooler, darker area on the photosphere of the sun. The average sunspot is about the same diameter as the earth.
