As requested, some photos from our trip to England Edinburgh Sweden and Germany.

The trip from Heathrow to Kings cross was largly underground. This is my first glimpse of England proper

We took the train to Doncaster where we stayed in a second cousins home

Doncaster Minster

This funny little door, not big enough for a man to go through, in the minster wall intriged us. We subsequently found out it is known as the devils door. It is (supposedly) opened during batisms. The devil is supposedly driven out by batism and this door located near the font allows the devil to leave the church.

Outside the minster was the remains of a roman wall. You can see the wall in the background,

The next day we went to Cusworth hall, a manor house set up as a museum.

We were in Doncaster for the wedding of mumpads brother. Parts of the church he was married in are over 1000 years old.

Sightseeing is thirsty work. Perhaps we should check out a pub. Looks like this place has beer, lets check it out.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/dadpad/Doncaster%20England/EuropeUKAug2010055.jpg
So where is this castle?
Its at the top of a fecking great hill.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/dadpad/Doncaster%20England/EuropeUKAug2010048.jpg

Due to time constraints we decided not to climb the hill. so waht else was there to see? Um ah! said cold erin.

Some observations about England. They build right up next to the road. No grass verge or nature strip. In a lot of places there isnt even a footpath. Just house wall|road.
Its dirty and unkempt in a lot of places. Road signs are hidden by vegetation, rubbish/litter is prominant and everything looks like it needs a good spruce up.
I am AMAZED at the volume of vegetation. hedgerows line all the roads and field fences. I'm used to being able to see miles across the paddocks. I did feel a little hemmed in. Houses in Australia are generally one story. England generally 2 or 3 stories.
Pommies trying to do Aussie accents or speak the slang is just embarresing, but thanks for trying anyway.

Edinburg tomorrow.

Some more observations;
English drivers are very courteous. they flash their lights and let you in if you are stuck in a side street trying to turning into a constant stream of traffic.

Counterflow parking. If theres a parking spot on the other side of the road and all the other parked cars are facing in the opposite directions you just dive in from yiour side.
Roads are so narrow that parking is only on one side. Where cars are parked you have to wait for cars coming in the opposite direction to pass before you can proceed.
Everything is like a 1000 years old.
The stupid car hire place in Doncaster that wanted rate notices or gas bills as proof of identifaction. Ah hello! i just flew in from Australia! why would i have my gas bill?

A sign frowned at me for driving too fast! I kid you not. Smiley emoticon for the correct speed, frowny emoticon for too fast.

@dadpad,
Great photos bring back memories. Did you visit anything in the Lake District?

Looking forward to your Sweden photos to see how much it has changed since I was there in 1968.

Oh well Ok
Chris' boat.
Chris is the father of my new sister inlaw. He lives on a canal boat in the middle of Doncaster. I loved it. Theres talk of him moving to Australia and I want to talk him into keeping the boat so we can holiday on it. (not much chance of that but It seemed liked a good idea.
