I am a current lawn business owner looking to branch off into some home services. I would like your opinions. Would you recommend going door to door and selling these services or putting fliers on doors? If you were to receive a flier on your door, would you be willing to purchase one or more of these services?

Here are our current services and prices:

Curb Painting - $15.00
High quality pavement paint with white background and black numbers for high visibility. $5 extra for reflective white paint.

Peephole Installation - $15.00
Allows you and your family to see who is knocking on your door.

Deadbolt Lock Installation - $40.00
Regular door knobs/handles do not deter theft. Dead bolts will give your home added protection. Available in multiple designs.

Window Locks - $10.00 per window
Don't allow burglars easy access. Two locks per window. Multiple color styles

Smoke Detector Installation - $20.00 each
Photoelectric smoke detectors work great yet do not set off easily when doing regular cooking. We recommend one per living space.

Please leave me your opinions. I really appreciate your time

@ryante,
Your prices are too low. You can't paint and number a curb for $15.00.

I might respond to newspaper advertising, but never flyers or door to door. Too many scams out there. If you advertise, be sure your phone gets answered. Have a physical address and land line. Otherwise, you will like you just drove into town with nothing but a Rolodex and a cell phone.

Not picking on you; that's just the way people tend to look at solicitations.

@roger,
Prices depend on where you live. Down here the cost of living is really low as well as labor.

As far as being a scam, my fly reads "You do not pay until the service is complete." Take that into consideration.

Right now I am getting a 1% - 2% response rate with flyers. My main question is how people respond to flyers compared to door to door sales.

@ryante,
We've had our curb painted a few times with someone just showing up at the door. Can't remember what we paid -- probably $15 or $20. Be sure you check with the neighborhood HOA first and if it's a strict one, they'll demand uniformity.

Another service we like is pressure washing -- an enterprising young man showed up at our door one morning after noticing a discolored brick wall (the HOA had already sent us a warning letter) and he's been coming a couple times a year ever since. He had fliers available with pricing and other services.

We regularly get fliers for painters and cleaning services (found our cleaning lady that way) and I save them just in case. Good luck!

I would never buy from door to door sales. Flyers would be okay, if they looked professional and not like it was done "el cheapo".

If you have satisfied customers, have the opportunity for feedback from these customers for new customers.

@ryante,
You'll get the biggest bang for your flyer advertising buck by doing a good job for existing customers, giving them a business card and flyer designed for them to pass on to their friends. Give your customer a discount for each new customer referred by them.

Keep handing out those business cards and referral flyers each time you do a job for someone and it will pay off.
