not to really jump to kitty's defence, but if you took out the march break and other christmas break and stat holidays, it is about 9 months with a two month summer break

I agree - but I would have hoped that a student would realize there is 12 months in a year.

In America we have a similar education system/standard. the point for 9 months of continuous schooling: so that kids won't forget things they learn on the way and it's really stressful.
2 months of break: so that the students will forget everything that was taught in the last 9 months and will be forced to learn it all over again.

this way the national level of intelligence is always kept low and under control. A few who see this take summer school, and those will do well. you see, there just isn't enough room for EVERYONE to succeed...
(and you will naturally see my point; there aren't any summer schools from K-5th grade WHEN IT MATTERS MOST. once you are in your teens, your brain is not plastic enough to absorb new information efficiently enough, and there goes our youth and our future with it...

and as a result, we get people who bother us with statements like
" 9 + 2 isn't 12"...
