Hiya Booman
I keep a list of 'the first rockandroll song' claimants (I read a lot of music history).
The earliest I've got is 1929.
I thought the Ike song generally credited as the first R&R song was 'Rocket '88' which had Jackie Brenston singing with Ike's Kings Of Rhythm band - also 1951.
Hingehead,
You're absolutely right!
Billy was an old friend of mine who also sang with Ike. he creeped into my consious.
Ole Ike was quite the innovator, and talent spotter.
Oooh, one degree of separation from Ike Turner. Cool.
The Mirror Pool - Lisa Gerrard
A quick note. I think Carole Kaye was the female bass player who did a lot of sessions in L.A. I've never heard that claim about the Funk Brothers not being on the final product. I know for a fact that bass player James Jamerson was on nearly every Motown release...his sound is unmistakeable.
As far as the first rock song?
Rocket 88 a lot of people say. I think it's a tie between Rock Around The Clock and That's All Right Mama by Elvis. Only because these two songs were completely different than what had come before.
Honorable mention goes to There's Good Rockin Tonight by Wynonie Harris.
MP3 online of Tori Amos playing "Rocket Man" at a show in Philly.
I swear, I'm straight.
Hingehead, I'm drawing you in; since were having a dialogue, and I've been blessed enough to have worked with the likes of B.B. King, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, and others, that puts you within a few degrees of royalty, and heads of state.

Thanks Boo, you can have a couple of Australian Prime Ministers and a few Australian sport and rock icons.
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Beyond the Missouri Sky, by Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny
not new, but new to me.
Just finished listening to this song on Sirius Outlaw Country.
Are You Drinking With Me, Jesus?
(Peter Berryman)
Do you nestle by my barstool
Makin' me so calm within
Have you touched me with your warmness
Or have I touched myself with gin?
cho: Are you drinkin' with me Jesus
I can't see you very clear
If you're drinkin' with me Jesus
Won't you buy a friend a beer?
If you're omnipresent, Jesus
You don't have to use the phone
If you're always by my side, Lord
You need never drink alone
Do you teeter with me, Jesus
On my way home so forlorn
If you think that you feel bad now
Wait until tomorrow morn
Does your head pound with the masses
As hungover you do rise
What does heaven look like, Jesus
Seen through holy bloodshot eyes
Should we take a taxi, Jesus
Should we try to walk from here
I know you can walk on water
Can you walk on this much beer?

Love that song. Never been able to find out who did it before...
Listening to the new M. Ward. Disappointing, it is.
Stillborn by Zakk Wylde
The feelings that I've felt are all dead and gone, yeah.

Keep at it, it might grow on you.
I didn't get the Arcade Fire on the first listen...
boy was I wrong.
People get ready, performed by the Blind Boys of Alabama.
I need to get to a live performance. The chills from listening to a concert on the radio are amazing. Live, I'd probably pass out. In a good way.

"Old Brown's Daughter"
There is an ancient party at the other end of town
And he keeps a little grocery store, the ancients name is Brown
And he has a lovely daughter, such a treat I never saw
Oh I only hope someday to be the old man's son-in-law.
Well, Old Brown he sells from off his shelf most anything you please
He's got juice tarts for the little boys, lollipops and cheese
And his daughter minds the store, and it's a treat just to see her serve
I'd like to run away with her but I don't have the nerve
[Chorus:]
And it's old Brown's daughter is a proper sort of girl,
Old Brown's daughter is a fair as any pearl
I wish I were a Lord Mayor, a Marquis or and Earl
And blow me if I wouldn't marry old Brown's girl.
Blow me if I wouldn't marry old Brown's girl.
Wel,l poor old Brown now has trouble with the gout,
He grumbles in his little parlour when he can't get out
Oh and when I make a purchase, lord, and she hands me the change
That girl she makes pulverized, I feel so very strangeChorus
But Miss Brown she smiles so sweetly when I say a tender word
Ah but old brown says that she must wed a Marquis or a Lord,
And I don't suppose it's ever one of those things I will be
But by jingo next election I will run for Trinity
[Chorus]

Haha. I've got a dad who loved bagpipes and a mom who seemed to love Johnny Horton. Am I in?
Booman - no shite? Marvelous! You'll tell us more, I hope.
Hingehead - looks like panzade took a run at your question:

I for sure don't know the answer. Not surprising with the bagpipes and Johnny Horton as my *standards*. Thank god for older brothers.
Beth..the Blind Boys of Alabama have been featured on CBC regularly lately...I'm with ya!
I'm listening to the sound of prime rib, roasting on the barbeque.
Sounds good.
