Life Lock

Just visited LifeLock.com, and found this:

Here is what LifeLock Offers You:

Proactive Identity Theft Protection
Reduce Junk Mail
Reduce Credit Card Offers
$1 Million Service Guarantee
Only $10 per Month

I am disappointed that the service costs $10.00 per month. I have been meaning to look into LifeLock, but the cost seems prohibitive.:dunno:

@billcompugeek,
I use Identity Shield and prepaid legal. $26/mo and am very happy

$10/mo is nothing compared to what one instance of identity theft will cost you

@Silverchild79,
I have all that protection... it's called bad credit.

A hostile split and eviction due to said split does that to ya.

@billcompugeek,
lifelock and companies of the sort are going to make a fortune on stupid people.

it's pretty simple to not get your id stolen.

shred your bills, cc offers, etc etc before you trash them
don't enter your CC number anywhere thats not on https or secured by verisign/etc online with a valid certificate.
DO NOT call in phone orders with your credit card!!! any $7 an hour rep can right down your number and take it home.
don't give your SSN out to anyone.

that's about it

@billcompugeek,
not that simple

I know my SSN is on file at my office, at our payroll dept's office, my insurance agent (I am my agent so that actually isn't an extra exposure for me but it is for you), and my mortgage broker. That's just off the top of my head. One dishonest cleaning person see's it was left out, credit card offer ends up in my neighbor's mail box, BOOM

**** happens, that's like saying auto insurance is for suckers, all you have to do is not wreck your car

@billcompugeek,
well, if it gets picked up from the insurance office, you can sue them for all they got. They aren't supposed to leave things like that lying around. you could close them down if you can prove it was stolen there.

Whole lot of truth there. That is pretty much my whole job now, is to insure that this kind of information does not get released. I really hope more businesses start accepting responsibility to there customers and there private information.

His debt was measured in British pounds. That means he lives in England. That means he doesn't have a (US) social.

@billcompugeek,
lol my company (which shall remain nameless) used to store the SSN's of the employees in the systems, for notes and orders and such. After a few years there, I kind of gave up on the idea that my SSN was private.

Bad credit isn't that bad, I would imagine. Now you have an excuse to not borrow money. If you have kids, I guess that could hurt. If it weren't for my being married, I'd NEVER borrow money, period. Of course, I'd be living in a cave or worse, but what the hell. I've always hated the idea of borrowing money.:no:

Before 911, the military would disclose all sorts of personal stuff on its troops to anyone who wanted it. The excuse was that we were 'government property', and therefore had no right to privacy. Some of that has changed, thankfully. After all, if they now want the troops out, crawling around, killing terrorists, it wouldn't be a good idea to broadcast to the world where everyone is stationed.:no:
