Drinking age?

I think we should abolish the minimum drinking age....evidence from around the world shows that countries were children learn about responsible drinking at an early age don't have the alcohol-related problems that we have here in the US.

and why is it that you can be drafted into war at 18 but can't drink for another two years? I think if you are putting your life on the line for your country you should at least be able to drink a beer or two!

The reason why you can join the military at 18 and go to war is because someone educates you. You spend a great deal of time getting prepared for a very big responsibility. Unlike drinking, no one educates you on that you are more or less cut loose with no advice or guidance.

@Fatal Freedoms,
I think the drinking age ought to be raised to 30.

@Fatal Freedoms,
I hate to admit that I was drinking beer when I was 13 and booze at 16. During that time, I destroyed property and had little respect for myself or others. My dad was a cop - he did the "scared straight" tour of the jail with me - that was enough to set me right. Boys at 18 are very vulnerable and easily swayed toward bad influences. Booze will only exacerbate their problems. And, we've all seen how well they handle liquor on college campuses. Sure, 18 is a good time to start drinking. Maybe they'll get lucky and only kill themselves while out loaded one night.

@Fatal Freedoms,
Exactly most of the population at age 18 is not yet mature enough to handle the responsibility of drinking. There is no training or class on how to drink responsibly. I do feel that there are a few 18 year olds out there that can handle it but for the most part they cant.

So what did you do in your freshman year of college..? Drink, drive fast, chase young girls, what else? That's definitely what I did as well as fight, play football, go to strip clubs, drive drunk and chase young girls....I know I said that twice, it was fun - what a great time in my life. Frankly, I'm lucky to have survived.

@Fatal Freedoms,
My freshman year of college consisted of drinking and playing video games with friends (I have never driven drunk), Drove fast (at the race track here in town), met a few girls and found the right one (we have a son now).

But I am one of the exceptions and sadly most kids cannot be trusted when it comes to booze. Hell the same goes for most adults even.

Good for you. I wasn't quite so lucky. I crashed 2 cars, neither one, my own...

@Fatal Freedoms,
Im sorry to hear that man. I think it is really naive of any of us to assume that kids are not going to get a hold of booze or beer but imagine how much easier if kids could buy it themselves.

@Fatal Freedoms,
IT would be a disaster. The only group that is for it are the guys 18-21 and the guys slightly older that want to get the young chicks drunk legally.

@socalgolfguy,
The problem is that teenagers are gonna drink either way, so if we ban them from pubs and restraunts then they will drink at wild parties thats hardly a safer alternative.

because you can't drink untill 21 drinking is seen as a badge of adulthood and is thus that much more appealing it's a "forbidden fruit", if anyone could drink then it wouldn't be such a big deal and wouldn't be so appealing.

So, then if legal drinking was at 18, wouldn't the 15 year olds also be looking forward to "adulthood"..?

So, do the 18 year olds have a pint or two or do they drink until they are stupid?

See? That's the problem with allowing 18 years olds to drink here. It's no different.
