[SIZE="2"]"You see the mountains and think them jamid (lifless, motionless); yet they progress, just as clouds progress. Such is the handiwork of Allah (God), who has disposed of everything in firmness. He is completely aware of all you do."

As in the case of other verses, let us first identify the points that will guide us to a scientific interpretation of this verse:

1. The mountains appear to-be static, yet are actually in motion.

2. This motion of the mountains is similar to the motion of clouds.

3. The motion of mountains is not an imaginary or relative occurence, but a firm manifestation of God's art.

I have been able to identify two very clear scientific explanations in this sacred verse. Indeed, these are miracles that will astonish any fair-minded scientist, as I hope to demonstrate below.

a) If we look at the geological structure of the earth, we find that the part formed of soil and rock (the "crust") constitutes a restricted layer like the thin rind of an orange. Most of the earth's diameter is constituted of molten metals and rock called "magma". Hence, there is a liquid core inside the earth, surrounded by various solid layers and finally, soil and rock or equivalently, mountains on the outside.

As the sacred verse clearly reveals, this structure is wholly a piece of divine handiwork. Approached from this standpoint, it will be readily comprehended that the earth's crust, for all its firmness, possesses a secret of very slow motion. These motions, which are more pronounced at the borders of the layers we call "faults", leave the door open for volcanoes and earthquakes.

The earth, therefore, has a very firm structure due to divine handiwork, as is clearly explained in the sacred verse; however, its core also possesses a very slow motion which is the subject of fluid statics. The stability and firmness of our world, which consists of various layers with differing structures alf the way down to the core, constitutes a divine miracle in itself.

b) "Yet the mountains progress, just as clouds progress. "
Since clouds move in the sky, mountains must also move in a spatial direction. If the verse is consulted, the first sentence states that "you think them Jamid" Jamid means physically static, inert, lifeless, motionless. How are mountains enabled to move in space like clouds?

There is only one way in which this movement can occur, and that is by way of the motion of the earth. Indeed, a very important miracle of the verse is the fact that clouds moving rapidly in the wind have approximately the same speed as the earth's rotation. Mountains progress like clouds in three dimensions, and this motion is the result of a firm balance, of sacred artwork.

Again, observe the subtlety of its wisdom when the verse, after informing us of the spatial progress of mountains, i.e. the motion of the earth, states that this phenomenon is the firm law of cosmic organization. What is this law of divine art? Here is what astrophysics has to say regarding this question.

All the stars and planets in the universe lead their existence within the harmony of two powerful balancing forces. One of these forces is gravitation, which is an ineluctible law of unity: All masses obey the tendency to become one single mass by attracting each other. The other force needed to continue their existence is the centrifugal force obtained their existence is the centrifugal force obtained by rotational motion. The sacred verse draws attention to this law, pointing out that the spatial movement of mountains similar to that of clouds is a principle of firmness. When God says: "Bring us a like verse, bring us even a like word" in the Koran regarding that Book, He also implies the secret of such marvels.

To summarize this second interpretation of the verse:

1. You think that the mountains are tixed.

2. They progress spatially like clouds,

3. Rotational motion contributes firmness to this process by delicately balancing the gravitational force.

4. This rotational movement, which is one of the basic laws of the universe, is a manifestation and principle of divine handiwork.

How beautifully, dear reader, each word of the verse underlines a different fact of science! —And this, fourteen centuries ago, in an age when people had many strange notions about the world, and additionally without confusing those people in their elementary mentality and landing them in ruin. Here is the art and here, the miracle of the Koran.

As for the final sentence of the verse, it expresses yet another profound law of divine truth: "He is completely aware of all you do."

Allah (God), who has created entire worlds with a physical art that defies comprehension, governs alt things at every point of the universe as if by a gigantic network of computers. Such a system implies that every event in the universe is automatically recorded in some mathematical sense.

The phenomena programmed by this means are manifested each instant, and make themselves visible through His will. Yesterday, we had difficulty in comprehending such matters. But today, thanks to recent discoveries and especially the examples provided by electronic brains and computer networks, we are able to reach a better appreciation. Actually, we live in a world of similitudes. When we say "Heaven", we are reminded of flowers, gardens and flowing rivers: We try to comprehend Heaven by analogy with the beauties of this world.

Iron is one of the elements highlighted in the Quran. In Surat al-Hadid, meaning Iron, we are informed by Allah (God):

[SIZE="3"]"And We (Allah) also sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind…" [The Noble Quran, 57:25][/SIZE]

The word "anzalna," translated as "sent down" and used for iron in the verse, could be thought of having a metaphorical meaning to explain that iron has been given to benefit people. But, when we take into consideration the literal meaning of the word, which is, "being physically sent down from the sky," as in the case of rain and Sun rays, we realize that this verse implies a very significant scientific miracle. Because, modern astronomical findings have disclosed that the iron found in our world has come from giant stars in outer space.38

Not only the iron on earth, but also the iron in the entire Solar System, comes from outer space, since the temperature in the Sun is inadequate for the formation of iron. The sun has a surface temperature of 6,000 degrees Celsius, and a core temperature of approximately 20 million degrees. Iron can only be produced in much larger stars than the Sun, where the temperature reaches a few hundred million degrees. When the amount of iron exceeds a certain level in a star, the star can no longer accommodate it, and it eventually explodes in what is called a "nova" or a "supernova." These explosions make it possible for iron to be given off into space.39

One scientific source provides the following information on this subject:

There is also evidence for older supernova events: Enhanced levels of iron-60 in deep-sea sediments have been interpreted as indications that a supernova explosion occurred within 90 light-years of the sun about 5 million years ago. Iron-60 is a radioactive isotope of iron, formed in supernova explosions, which decays with a half life of 1.5 million years. An enhanced presence of this isotope in a geologic layer indicates the recent nucleosynthesis of elements nearby in space and their subsequent transport to the earth (perhaps as part of dust grains).40

All this shows that iron did not form on the Earth, but was carried from Supernovas, and was "sent down," as stated in the verse. It is clear that this fact could not have been known in the 7th century, when the Qur'an was revealed. Nevertheless, this fact is related in the Quran, the Word of Allah, Who encompasses all things in His infinite knowledge.

Astronomy has also revealed that other elements also formed outside the Earth. In the expression "We also sent down iron" in the verse, the word "also" may well be referring to that idea. However, the fact that the verse specifically mentions iron is quite astounding, considering that these discoveries were made at the end of the 20th century. In his book Nature's Destiny, the well-known microbiologist Michael Denton emphasizes the importance of iron:

Of all the metals there is none more essential to life than iron. It is the accumulation of iron in the center of a star which triggers a supernova explosion and the subsequent scattering of the vital atoms of life throughout the cosmos. It was the drawing by gravity of iron atoms to the center of the primeval earth that generated the heat which caused the initial chemical differentiation of the earth, the outgassing of the early atmosphere, and ultimately the formation of the hydrosphere. It is molten iron in the center of the earth which, acting like a gigantic dynamo, generates the earth's magnetic field, which in turn creates the Van Allen radiation belts that shield the earth's surface from destructive high-energy-penetrating cosmic radiation and preserve the crucial ozone layer from cosmic ray destruction…

Without the iron atom, there would be no carbon-based life in the cosmos; no supernovae, no heating of the primitive earth, no atmosphere or hydrosphere. There would be no protective magnetic field, no Van Allen radiation belts, no ozone layer, no metal to make hemoglobin [in human blood], no metal to tame the reactivity of oxygen, and no oxidative metabolism.

The intriguing and intimate relationship between life and iron, between the red color of blood and the dying of some distant star, not only indicates the relevance of metals to biology but also the biocentricity of the cosmos…41

This account clearly indicates the importance of the iron atom. The fact that particular attention is drawn to iron in the Qur'an also emphasises the importance of the element. In addition, there is another hidden truth in the Qur'an which draws attention to the importance of iron: Surat al-Hadid 25, which refers to iron, contains two rather interesting mathematical codes.

"Al- Hadid" is the 57th sura in the Qur'an. The abjad of the word "Al-Hadid" in Arabic, when the numerological values of its letters are added up, is also 57. (For abjad calculations see the section on Numerological Calculations (Abjad) in the Quran.)

The numerological value of the word "hadid" alone is 26. And 26 is the atomic number of iron.

Moreover, iron oxide particles were used in a cancer treatment in recent months and positive developments were observed. A team led by Dr. Andreas Jordan, at the world famous Charit? Hospital in Germany, succeeded in destroying cancer cells with this new technique developed for the treatment of cancer-magnetic fluid hyperthermia (high temperature magnetic liquid). As a result of this technique, first performed on the 26-year-old Nikolaus H., no new cancer cells were observed in the patient in the following three months.

This method of treatment can be summarised as follows:

1. A liquid containing iron oxide particles is injected into the tumour by means of a special syringe. These particles spread throughout the tumour cells. This liquid consists of thousands of millions of particles, 1,000 times smaller than the red blood corpuscles, of iron oxide in 1 cm3 that can easily flow through all blood vessels.42

2. The patient is then placed in a machine with a powerful magnetic field.

3. This magnetic field, applied externally, begins to set the iron particles in the tumour in motion. During this time the temperature in the tumour containing the iron oxide particles rises by up to 45 degrees.

In a few minutes the cancer cells, unable to protect themselves from the heat, are either weakened or destroyed. The tumour may then be completely eradicated with subsequent chemotherapy.43

In this treatment it is only the cancer cells that are affected by the magnetic field, since only they contain the iron oxide particles. The spread of this technique is a major development in the treatment of this potentially lethal disease. In the treatment of such a widespread disease as cancer, the use of the expression "iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind" (Quran, 57:25) in the Quran is particularly noteworthy. Indeed, in that verse, the Quran may be indicating the benefits of iron for human health. (Allah knows best.)

Nickel (specifically the isotope Nickel62) is the heaviest material produced by star fusion. A supernova forms the heavier elements and isotopes.

Also, it isn't Iron60 as you claim... it's Iron56.

You're getting closer, but still missing that all important target. This is fun!

And if Iron was "sent down", how does it explain Earth's core?

Scientists have studied cloud types and have realized that rain clouds are formed and shaped according to definite systems and certain steps connected with certain types of wind and clouds.

One kind of rain cloud is the cumulonimbus cloud. Meteorologists have studied how cumulonimbus clouds are formed and how they produce rain, hail, and lightning.

They have found that cumulonimbus clouds go through the following steps to produce rain:

1) The clouds are pushed by the wind: Cumulonimbus clouds begin to form when wind pushes some small pieces of clouds (cumulus clouds) to an area where these clouds converge (see figures 1 and 2).

2) Joining: Then the small clouds join together forming a larger cloud1 (see figures 2 and 3).

3) Stacking: When the small clouds join together, updrafts within the larger cloud increase. The updrafts near the center of the cloud are stronger than those near the edges.2 These updrafts cause the cloud body to grow vertically, so the cloud is stacked up (see figures 3 (B), 4, and 5). This vertical growth causes the cloud body to stretch into cooler regions of the atmosphere, where drops of water and hail formulate and begin to grow larger and larger. When these drops of water and hail become too heavy for the updrafts to support them, they begin to fall from the cloud as rain, hail, etc.3

Allah (God) has said in the Quran:

[SIZE="3"] "Have you not seen how Allah (God) makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a stack, and then you see the rain come out of it...." (Quran, 24:43) [/SIZE]

Meteorologists have only recently come to know these details of cloud formation, structure, and function by using advanced equipment like planes, satellites, computers, balloons, and other equipment, to study wind and its direction, to measure humidity and its variations, and to determine the levels and variations of atmospheric pressure.4

The preceding verse, after mentioning clouds and rain, speaks about hail and lightning:

[SIZE="2"] "....And He (Allah) sends down hail from mountains (clouds) in the sky, and He strikes with it whomever He wills, and turns it from whomever He wills. The vivid flash of its lightning nearly blinds the sight." (Quran, 24:43) [/SIZE]

Meteorologists have found that these cumulonimbus clouds, that shower hail, reach a height of 25,000 to 30,000 ft (4.7 to 5.7 miles),5 like mountains, as the Quran said, [SIZE="2"]?...And He sends down hail from mountains (clouds) in the sky...?[/SIZE] (see figure 5 above).

This verse may raise a question. Why does the verse say ?its lightning? in a reference to the hail? Does this mean that hail is the major factor in producing lightning? Let us see what the book entitled Meteorology Today says about this. It says that a cloud becomes electrified as hail falls through a region in the cloud of supercooled droplets and ice crystals. As liquid droplets collide with a hailstone, they freeze on contact and release latent heat. This keeps the surface of the hailstone warmer than that of the surrounding ice crystals. When the hailstone comes in contact with an ice crystal, an important phenomenon occurs: electrons flow from the colder object toward the warmer object. Hence, the hailstone becomes negatively charged. The same effect occurs when supercooled droplets come in contact with a hailstone and tiny splinters of positively charged ice break off.

These lighter positively charged particles are then carried to the upper part of the cloud by updrafts. The hail, left with a negative charge, falls towards the bottom of the cloud, thus the lower part of the cloud becomes negatively charged. These negative charges are then discharged as lightning.6 We conclude from this that hail is the major factor in producing lightning.

This information on lightning was discovered recently. Until 1600 AD, Aristotle?s ideas on meteorology were dominant. For example, he said that the atmosphere contains two kinds of exhalation, moist and dry. He also said that thunder is the sound of the collision of the dry exhalation with the neighboring clouds, and lightning is the inflaming and burning of the dry exhalation with a thin and faint fire.7 These are some of the ideas on meteorology that were dominant at the time of the Quran?s revelation, fourteen centuries ago.

Still non the wiser on the Job front, but hey I have done what I can and what ever will be will.

So it's been quite interesting seeing how this 'debate' has evolved. Looks like we still haven't estabilished that we have any evidence of the deity and that abstract sentances from a book of mythology somehow accounts for pages and pages 'science' which have not as yet been peer reviewed and verified through reproducable tests.

Is that about it, am I up to speed?

The word sea (bahr) is used 32 times in the Quran. The word bahr is used both for the sea and other waters like lakes and rivers. The word land (berr, yabas) is used 13 times. If we calculate the ratio of 32 to 45 the result is 71.111%.

You may look up in any encyclopedia in the world and see that the lands cover 29% of the earth whereas the seas cover 71% of it. It is really an interesting miracle that scientific and the Quranic ratios of the lands to the seas are exactly the same. This knowledge which was not available in prophet Muhammad?s time is coded in the Quran with concordance of words. People who will outgrow their stubbornness will see that this is an easy to understand and impossible to imitate miracle.

It was believed by earlier civilizations that the moon emanates its own light. Science now tells us that the light of the moon is reflected light. However this fact was mentioned in the Quran 1,400 years ago in the following verse:

[SIZE="3"]"Blessed is He (Allah) Who made Constellations in the skies, And placed therein a Lamp And a Moon giving light." [Quran 25:61][/SIZE]

The Arabic word for the sun in the Quran, is shams. It is referred to as siraaj, which means a ?torch? or as wahhaaj which means ?a blazing lamp? or as diya which means ?shining glory?. All three descriptions are appropriate to the sun, since it generates intense heat and light by its internal combustion. The Arabic word for the moon is qamar and it is described in the Quran as muneer, which is a body that gives nur i.e. light. Again, the Quranic description matches perfectly with the true nature of the moon, which does not give off light itself and is an inert body that reflects the light of the sun. Not once in the Quran, is the moon mentioned as siraaj, wahhaaj or diya or the sun as nur or muneer. This implies that the Quran recognizes the difference between the nature of sunlight and moonlight.

Consider the following verses related to the nature of light from the sun and the moon:

Only after advances have been made in science, do we now know that cytoplasm, the basic substance of the cell is made up of 80% water. Modern research has also revealed that most organisms consist of 50% to 90% water and that every living entity requires water for its existence. Was it possible 14 centuries ago for any human-being to guess that every living being was made of water? Moreover would such a guess be conceivable by a human being in the deserts of Arabia where there has always been scarcity of water? The following verse refers to the creation of animals from water:

The following verse refers to the creation of human beings from water:

Professor Tejatat Tejasen is the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Previously, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the same university. Prof. Durga Rao is an expert in the field of Marine Geology and was a professor at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah. He was asked to comment on the following verse:

[SIZE="3"]"Or (the Unbelievers? state) Is like the depths of darkness In a vast deep ocean, Overwhelmed with billow Topped by billow, Topped by (dark) clouds: Depths of darkness, one Above another: if a man Stretches out his hand, He can hardly see it! For any to whom Allah Giveth not light, there is no light!" [The Noble Quran 24:40][/SIZE]

Prof. Rao said that scientists have only now been able to confirm, with the help of modern equipment that there is darkness in the depths of the ocean. Humans are unable to dive unaided underwater for more than 20 to 30 meters, and cannot survive in the deep oceanic regions at a depth of more than 200 meters. This verse does not refer to all seas because not every sea can be described as having accumulated darkness layered one over another. It refers especially to a deep sea or deep ocean, as the Quran says, "darkness in a vast deep ocean". This layered darkness in a deep ocean is the result of two causes:

1. A light ray is composed of seven colours. These seven colours are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red (VIBGYOR). The light ray undergoes refraction when it hits water. The upper 10 to 15 metres of water absorb the red colour. Therefore if a diver is 25 metres under water and gets wounded, he would not be able to see the red colour of his blood, because the red colour does not reach this depth. Similarly orange rays are absorbed at 30 to 50 metres, yellow at 50 to 100 metres, green at 100 to 200 metres, and finally, blue beyond 200 metres and violet and indigo above 200 metres. Due to successive disappearance of colour, one layer after another, the ocean progressively becomes darker, i.e. darkness takes place in layers of light. Below a depth of 1000 meters there is complete darkness. [Oceans, Elder and Pernetta, p. 27]

2. The sun?s rays are absorbed by clouds, which in turn scatter light rays thus causing a layer of darkness under the clouds. This is the first layer of darkness. When light rays reach the surface of the ocean they are reflected by the wave surface giving it a shiny appearance. Therefore it is the waves which reflect light and cause darkness. The unreflected light penetrates into the depths of the ocean. Therefore the ocean has two parts. The surface characterized by light and warmth and the depth characterized by darkness. The surface is further separated from the deep part of the ocean by waves. The internal waves cover the deep waters of seas and oceans because the deep waters have a higher density than the waters above them. The darkness begins below the internal waves. Even the fish in the depths of the ocean cannot see; their only source of light is from their own bodies.

The Quran rightly mentions: "Darkness in a vast deep ocean overwhelmed with waves topped by waves".
In other words, above these waves there are more types of waves, i.e. those found on the surface of the ocean. The Quranic verse continues, "topped by (dark) clouds; depths of darkness, one above another."
These clouds as explained are barriers one over the other that further cause darkness by absorption of colours at different levels.

[SIZE="3"]Prof. Durga Rao concluded by saying, "1400 years ago a normal human being could not explain this phenomenon in so much detail. Thus the information must have come from a supernatural source".[/SIZE]

Yes, the source of such knowledge must be from a level beyond that of man. It cannot be from nature, as Professor Rao said, but this is far beyond nature, and far beyond human capability. What Professor Rao was trying to say is that this is something which cannot be attributed to a natural being, for it is truly the speech of the one who knows nature, the universe and its secrets, as the Quran tells us:

[SIZE="2"]"Say: It (this Quran) has been sent down by Him (Allah) Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [The Noble Quran 25:6][/SIZE]

It is from Allah (God), The Creator.

It?s a glorious sunny morning out at sea?I have to wear sunglasses up on deck from the glare off the water, and plenty of sunblock on my nose! In about five hours, the ALVIN will return from a day at the vents, and I can?t wait to hear about the latest data the researchers have collected.

The researchers in ALVIN certainly don?t need to wear sunglasses. It?s dark down there at the bottom of the sea?darker than you can probably even imagine! Let me explain...

The ocean is very, very deep; light can only penetrate so far below the surface of the ocean. As the light energy travels through the water, the molecules in the water scatter and absorb it. At great depths, light is so scattered that there is nothing left to detect. Only the very top layers of the ocean get enough light to support plants, and most of the truly abundant animal life is crowded into the top 200 meters. This upper region is called the photic zone; almost all of the marine plants and tiny microscopic marine organisms that engage in photosynthesis can thrive only in the photic zone.

Two hundred meters is a lot of ocean, right? Maybe, but the depth of the photic zone is only a tiny fraction of the ocean?s total depth. (The depth of the ocean varies greatly depending on where you are; here at the Juan de Fuca Ridge, the depth below me is about 2,300 meters (~1.5 miles). The greatest ocean depth ever measured, at the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific, is about 11,000 meters, almost seven miles!) Below the photic zone, from 200 to 1,000 meters, is the aphotic (a meaning without and photic meaning light) zone. In the aphotic zone; all that?s left of sunlight is a dim, dark, blue-green light, too weak to allow photosynthesis to occur. There is food to be had, though; detritus, bits of decaying plants, and animal waste falls from above to feed the organisms in the aphotic zone.

After the aphotic zone, there?s complete darkness. From 1,000 meters below the surface, all the way to the sea floor, no sunlight penetrates the darkness; and because photosynthesis can?t take place, there are no plants, either. Animals that live in the abyssal zone feed on detritus raining down from above?or on each other. And sometimes they make their own light; certain species of deep sea fish and jellyfish have special light-producing cells.

Obviously, organisms who live at the deep sea vents can?t rely on the Sun; instead, many of them rely on the chemicals that come out of the vents?the process they use to create food is called chemosynthesis instead of photosynthesis. Pretty amazing, right? But how can we even see them from the ALVIN if it?s so dark down there?

As the ALVIN reaches the bottom of the ocean, there is no natural light. The pilots plot the position of the sub with both standard navigation equipment and with special topographical (or 3-D) maps that are made by side scan sonar. To find a specific site, the pilots use the 3-D maps, but they must also rely on visual clues. Visual work is difficult because they only have the light of the sub. Imagine looking for rock samples on land in total darkness, with only a flashlight?things seem to suddenly loom out of the blackness, and it?s hard to see enough to find what you?re looking for. These folks are often trying to find a single small probe, only a couple meters in length, or a specific spot they?ve visited before. Talk about a needle in a haystack! So it?s quite helpful to have a pilot who knows the area well; it?s a bit like when you hike?you look at the map, but even the best map doesn?t show the individual trees that you recognize as you become familiar with a specific place.

Figure 1: Conditions inside the ALVIN are very cramped. Three people, usually two scientists and a pilot, can barely fit. A total dive in these tight quarters might last eight to ten hours. To see what?s around the sub, the ALVIN pilots use the spotlights on the outside of the sub and the video cameras mounted on the front of the sub to see what?s around it. There is also a small porthole for a direct view of the outside. The lights of the sub penetrate about 30 feet into the darkness. Video cameras constantly record what comes into view, and the tapes are later played back on board ship to document major events of the dive. All the electronics run on batteries and there is no tether connecting the sub to the research vessel 2,250 meters (over one mile) above it. In other words, the ALVIN?with researchers and crew inside?is totally on its own once it?s launched. Alone in the dark!
