@msolga,
Couldn't believe we had Latham sound bytes again!

"Rudd is addicted to media attention!"
Oh, the irony.

Did anyone see the Barnaby Choice grab on the end of Insiders on Sunday?

Apparently it was from Countrywide or Landline or whatever the current incarnation of the ABCs 'people on the land' news show is called.

Barnaby is on horse as part of a cattle muster. At one point he says 'Tony told me that if I got my arse in a saddle at least it would keep the coalition out of trouble. Well just watch me, Tony.

Anyone see the David Barker stuff? Lib sitting member for Longman? Saying that the ALP's Bosnian born candidate was planning for a muslim takeover Australia and that Tony Abbott was 'God's mouthpiece'? Oh my FSM.

@hingehead,

I thought the people's assembly on climate change was silly at first, but I thought Julia did a nice justification.

No point introducing legislation that a change of government will tear up, better to have the majority of people convinced of the action so that it's a no-brainer for either side of politics. Don't think the assembly will achieve that but it made sense.

You know, that's the most positive response I've yet come across to the peoples' assembly idea, hinge. Problem is, we could keep talking & talking endlessly & never quite agreeing ion what exactly should be done....

Me, I think it's time for some real leadership on climate change strategies. Like some clearly explained doable proposals ... which don't reward the polluters to nearly the same extent that Rudd's ETS would have.

Yep, talk about a blast from the past! Surprised
This election campaign has everything! Bob & Blanche (eek!), Bob & Paul at each other's throats again, outrage about Blanche's comments about Hazel ...
Now if we could get some half-interesting policies to discuss & debate, it'd be really, really good! Wink

I'm so sad I missed that!

I've been reading a bit about that fellow's pronouncements. One Muslim parliamentarian would be the thin edge of the wedge! Before you know it they'll overrun the place!
Did he really say that about Tony Abbott? Good grief. (But I suspect Tony might agree with him! Wink )

So who's the the rat in the ranks (or maybe the rats (plural) in the ranks ) who are spreading these undermining Julia stories to Laurie Oaks, etc?
Who in the Labor party has something to gain by undermining Julia's feminist & "lefty" credentials?

Could it be Kevin, in grudge mode?:

Party-free politics ... A Kevin Rudd campaign sign in the Brisbane suburb of Hawthorne today with something missing from the Labor logo. Photo: Daniel Hurst

The ghost of Kevin Rudd continues to stalk Julia Gillard's campaign.

With the Labor leader touring the crucial state of Queensland today, Mr Rudd has so far failed to publicly support his former deputy, who knifed him last month to secure the top job in the face of bad party polling.

Mr Rudd has not even mentioned the Prime Minister by name since the election was called 10 days ago - dodging repeated questions from journalists last week on a much-publicised day of campaigning in his electorate of Griffith.

And this is what political commentary has come to today...
In the absence of anything resembling a half interesting campaign, with different policies from the two political leaders to discuss & analyze. Today's most interesting story is just who, within the ALP inner sanctum, is stabbing Julia Gillard in the back. And Why.

Any interesting perspectives from Oz political conspiracy theorist folks out there?
Me, I'm stumped. Utterly bewildered by it all. Neutral :

ANALYSIS:
Julia Gillard did a credible job this morning of trying to limit the damage of continuing leaks.

But the paranoia within her party about who is doing the leaking - and more to the point, why - remains at fever pitch.

http://images.theage.com.au/2010/07/28/1720332/article-rat-420x0.jpg
Who is the shadowy figure whose damaging leaks are derailing Julia Gillard's campaign? Graphic: Liam Phillips

While many suspect an embittered Kevin Rudd or his supporters are somehow behind the leaks, senior Labor MPs and officials privately believe this is far too neat and convenient.

Rudd would be pulling so much ire on his head that he may as well kiss goodbye to his political career within Labor.

More complicated and Machiavellian motives by others are suspected.

One theory is that enemies of Rudd are working far behind the scenes to place him in the frame - and thus destroy any chance he might have of returning to a senior frontbench position, as promised by Gillard. The theory continues that two or more ambitious Labor MPs are planting leaks that would appear to come from Rudd.

Under this scenario, Gillard and her senior allies would be infuriated by the belief that the former PM was prepared to wreck her campaign and reputation: so infuriated that Rudd would never be considered for the foreign affairs ministry he so desires.

The result of that would be that a desirable frontbench seat would be freed up for an ambitious plotter.

One current minister and one less senior Labor MP are suspected by those who place credence in this theory.

The problem with it is that such plotters would risk blowing their entire party's chances of retaining government.

They would need to believe that Gillard was going to lead Labor to victory whatever damage she might sustain, or to have such a narrow focus on trying to destroy Rudd that they were prepared to ignore the bigger picture.

The other conspiracy theory under quiet inquiry is that a very senior minister wants to expose Gillard as hypocritical, arguing positions behind closed doors that are far from her old leftist views, and then publicly embracing social policies that others fought for.

The strength of this theory is that only a very senior minister would be privy to conversations during high-level decision-making on such issues as paid parental leave and pension increases.

Its weakness is that such a figure would hardly put in jeopardy the government they serve.

It could destroy their own career.

But what if such a figure was so unimpressed by Gillard - and perhaps didn't mind if Rudd got the blame - that they had decided their political career was no longer worth pursuing, anyway?

The fact that such thinking is occurring among a number of well-placed Labor government figures makes clear that the content of the leaks are not the biggest problem facing Julia Gillard.

Suspicion and Byzantine conspiracy theories swirling within the party itself have the ability to do greater damage.

I failed to report on two polls published yesterday.
The Newspoll (the Australian nespaper) & the Galaxy poll:

Quote:
Gillard slumps in latest Newspoll

The latest Newspoll shows a slump in support for Prime Minister Julia Gillard, but Labor still holds an election-winning two-party preferred lead.

The figures, published in The Australian this morning, show the Coalition overtaking Labor in the primary vote while Tony Abbott is closing in on Julia Gillard in the preferred prime minister stakes.

The Coalition led the primary vote 42 per cent to 40 per cent after gaining four points while Labor lost two.

Labor's two-party preferred rating dropped three points to 52 per cent, while the Coalition gained three points to be on 48 per cent.

The figures, the worst for Labor since Ms Gilard took over from Kevin Rudd, mean that Labor's previous 10-point two-party lead over the Coaltion has been slashed to just four points.

Ms Gillard's preferred prime minister lead has been almost halved, down from 30 points to 16 points. Her preferred PM rating dropped back from 57 to 50 per cent while Mr Abbott gained seven points to 34 per cent.

Labor strategists say their announcement last week of a citizens' assembly on climate change has been unpopular, and they will move to fix it.

A separate Galaxy poll, also published this morning, shows Labor maintaining its two-party lead, 52 per cent to 48 per cent.

The Coalition primary vote fell three points to 41 per cent. ..<cont>

@dadpad,
I honestly don't know, dadpad.
My strongest hunch, at this point in time, is that might be a bit small fry for Kevin (& his sorely bruised ego) .
I think he hankers after something like a very important position on the world stage. Some sort of ambassadorial position, perhaps?
I think he'd like nothing better than to get as far away from Oz politics as he can. And who could blame him for that?

Legally he definitely can, although it would be really bad form not to announce you're running as an independent before the election. Even Barker (of the Chaser's fat joke list) has said he's running as an independent - to the Chaser as they tried to present him with the 'Mal Award'. From the few things I've heard come out of his mouth I worry about how any party could have him as an elected official.

Hello, laughoutlood.
You're from Oz?

Could you elaborate a little on your comment above, please?
I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

@msolga,
Jon Fain (744 ABC radio) is suggesting that Kevin Rudd should sue Mark Latham if he's been libeled by these comments. And that should clear everything up nicely , one way or the other (if he decides not to)!

Another just-in report:

Quote:
Kevin Rudd has been admitted to hospital for an operation to have his gall bladder removed but has promised to campaign to help Julia Gillard when he is released.

Mr Rudd's office released a statement this afternoon saying the former prime minister would be happy, upon his release, not just to campaign in his seat of Griffith but across Australia to help Ms Gillard. ...<cont>
