If you pay any attention to opinion polls ...
Here's the latest one from the AGE/Neilson:

Quote:
THE Gillard government has narrowed the Coalition's lead to be in its best position in six months, in an Age/Nielsen poll showing overwhelming public support for the decision to process asylum seekers offshore.

For the second consecutive month, a majority of voters said the carbon tax was making no difference to them.

But federal Labor would still be trounced by a 4 per cent swing in an election held now, and the ALP ''brand'' received another setback with the decisive weekend defeat of the Northern Territory government, with a 6 per cent swing against Labor. ...<cont>

I don't think this is quite what Gonski had in mind! Wink

@hingehead,
Gawd, is it any wonder Hingehead?

His hatchet work makes Bligh look like the captain of the Good Ship Lollypop.

Axing 5,000 positions seems like an odd way to "fix" anything, but I guess it's a wait-and-see from me. Nation-wide strike action is probably on the cards though. From nurses, teachers, doctors, mental health workers. 'Bout time we got the people interested in their own future, I guess.

@Builder,
I think it's incredibly stupid from Newman - this sort of slashing has everyone quaking in their boots, everyone cuts back on their spending, local businesses and employers suffer. Which means private sector layoffs and a spiral into hell.

This sort of scare can be useful in high inflation times to check price rises, but we have SFA inflation. There are plenty of ways to cut spending without appearing to be throwing deckchairs off the Titanic.

I guess that's what happens when you make a mayor a state premier and a thoroughly inexperienced Party gets power with a huge majority.

I take heart that Australians see, understand and learn from these things. Campbell is like a dry run of Tony Abbott PM.

That opening piece is no bullshit. Mrs Hinge has been called a 'white c...' in meetings with Balkanu.

@hingehead,
The dry-run thing I gotta agree with. I call Tone Rabbit the Train Wreck waiting to happen on another political RW board I visit.

Why are people not shouting about our so-called economic boom, while all this slashing and spending cuts are happening? Seems to me that the only real winners in the mining boom are Palmer (China First party hopeful) and Rineheart (my kids think I'm NPD).

If there's no other benefit for Australians, apart from watching another real estate bubble benefitting foreign investors, then why call it a boom?

@Builder,
I guess the mining tax is an attempt to spread the wealth resources boom - particularly to those sectors that suffer because of the high aussie dollar (which is at least partially caused by the resources boom). The two speed economy is just a catchphrase.

I saw another good nickname for the Rabbit 'Phony Habit'.

I wonder at what point coalition leadership speculation will start in the media. If Gillard gets to 40% and Tony keeps heading to 30%?

@hingehead,
Lucky we still have some form of independence in the media, and Tone is only ever as good as his last speech. It's early days yet. Oh, and thanks for that Noel Pearson link. I'll have to read it all later.

I've worked amongst the Broome indig political set. Calling the language "colourful" is a huge understatement.

From this morning's AGE opinion pages:

Quote:
The attacks on Julia Gillard are heading into dangerous territory.

Misogynists and nut jobs need to turn down the volume:

Mr Morris was asked on Sydney ABC Radio on Tuesday about a tough interview ABC television's Leigh Sales did last week with Mr Abbott, in which Mr Abbott seemed to stumble over whether he had read a statement by mining company BHP Billiton.

''Well, Leigh can be a real cow sometimes when she is doing her interviews,'' Mr Morris said.

Lib strategist sorry for calling journalist 'cow':

The point, Grahame Morris, is not that Leigh Sales is a "cow".
The point is the Tony Abbott revealed himself to be an incompetent ignoramus during that 7:30 Report interview.

@dlowan,
You don't think the nuttiness & hatefulness is becoming more overt?

Quote:
I saw something that disturbed me greatly: a young man wearing what appeared to be a home-made T-shirt featuring a caricature of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. She had a bullet in her head. ...

.....The day before that, a 52-year-old man avoided jail after being charged with threatening to kill Attorney-General Nicola Roxon and state Labor MP Jill Hennessy at a public function. He was highly agitated; both women were justifiably frightened.

@dlowan,
Very frightening, isn't it?

Julia Gillard was absolutely correct in calling those aging male hate-mongers "misogynists" & "nut jobs" at her press conference the other day ... they have been relentless ... pursuing her relentlessly, inciting hatred & derision on whatever grounds, often very personal ....
I have never seen a prime minister treated with such contempt & disrespect (though maybe Whitlam. though that was on political grounds, nowhere near as personal )
I'm not her no 1 fan by a long shot, but I have to say, I really admire her guts & determination. Her ability to to keep plugging away & doing the job she was elected to do. She's tough.
But heck, this must take a toll!

@msolga,
btw, Grahame Morris, who called Leigh Sales (7;30 Report) a "cow" this morning on ABC radio in Sydney (see my post above) ... then apologised (sort of) ....

.. also said this about Julia Gillard in May of this year ... then apologised. Rolling Eyes

Maybe some vicious old dogs who apparently can't learn new tricks school be put out to pasture?

Quote:
PROMINENT Liberal Party strategist Grahame Morris has come under fire for a comment about Prime Minister Julia Gillard that "they ought to be kicking her to death". ....

@msolga,
Last word & then I'm done. (sorry. I'm just outraged by all this.)

I know Julia Gillard never wanted her gender to be an issue in her prime ministership ... but surely the abuse she has received from the Allan Jones's, the Pickerings, the Grahame Morris's, the Abbotts etc, etc, etc ... is gender based. And they have gone way too far.
Surely it's high time for decent parliamentarians (say nothing of the media) to make a stand to reign in the attack dogs?

@msolga,
Maybe it's the death throes of fading patriarchy? Most uni graduates and post graduates are women, men are losing their way and flailing hopelessly about in meritocracy.
