I don't know if it's sudden. Vampires have been pretty popular for a long time now. I think the recent shows have found a way to add more sex and romance into the stories however, and this seems to be a successful formula with the female audience.
I suppose the children are also vampires, in hiding.

I haven't seen this particular show. I hadn't even heard about it until you mentioned it. What network is it on?
