I use windows 98, second edition. The most common time it happens is when I click on an internet link in express. Usually when I've already got an IE window open.

Explorer caused an error in kernel32.dll
Ok, first of all, try this.

In your Windows directory look for a folder called "APPLOG". It's a hidden folder so you may have to enable viewing of hidden folder's.

Skip this small text part if you can find that folder in your windows directory.
In Windows XP the following will display hidden files and folders, I think it should be the same with 98.

In Exploter (Windows Exporer, not Internet Explorer) fo to Tools > Folder Options

When the options open up click on the "View" tab. There is a "Hidden Files and Folders section in which you need to select "Show hidden files and folders".

Click apply, then "OK".

Once you find the "APPLOG" folder rename it to "APPLOG2".

To rename it right click on it and click "Rename"

See if that solves it or causes and problems. If it causes any problems reame the folder to it's original name.

That's the simplest and safest way to solve it. Below is another method.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following steps:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
In the Named box, type *.pwl, and then click Find Now.
In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Delete. Repeat step 3 until all of the .pwl files are deleted.
On the File menu, click Close.
Restart the computer. The password list files are re-created automatically when you log on to Windows.
Download the Mspwlupd.exe file from the following Microsoft Web site, and then double-click the file to run it.

NOTE: You do not need to perform this step if you are running Windows 95 OSR2 or Windows 98.The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

It might be a good time to back-up your data. If things get worse you might have to re-install.

It's things like this that should make all of us come up with a good back-up method. I found a firewire hard-drive and applescript makes my back-up's easy. It sucks to do but we all need to back-up our vital data.

Sometimes you just need a fresh start. I.E. a format and re-install.

If you can upgrade to a NT based OS (2000 or XP) that would help alot.

I"m just hanging out a couple of months now to see if my employer will give me some support to study computer science. At which point I can invest in a new machine, and claim a tax deduction. i've been using Norton Ghost at work to create images of the machines I've been setting up. I believe there's a version called Ghost explorer, which allows you to take a complete image, and then restore just the files you want. Which is what I'll need on this brand name machine, as I can't clone it to a new machine of a different manufacturer. And I won't be getting one of these again.

Wilso,

This message is your computer telling you it wants you to install Red Hat Linux. That is the only way to exorcise the demons of Microsoft.

If you are going to study computer science, this would be a good start.

once I've got a new one, and it's set up the way I want, this will become my test machine.

I think you've nailed it, Wilso. Craven has lead you down the straight & narrow for what I believe is by far the most common cause of the particular error you were getting. Posting error messages verbatim is always helpful, so good on you.
