Running into the unexpected during travel is always so much fun, because you see things that was never planned, but remains one of the highlights of the trip. Caprice, that was quick! Good show. So, who's that handsome bunch in the picture? margo, When I visited Ireland a few years ago, the weather was quite nice, but our tour included only the bottom half of Ireland. When I went to Blarney Castle, I lost my gift of gab. ;(

c.i.: Sorry, I don't know who the people are in the pic. I got it from this web site:

http://students.concord.edu/ameadows/europe.htm

As far as the unexpected goes something margo said earlier reminded me of when I was in England....just before I turned 18, I went over to the U.K. with a friend of mine. I had moved away when my Dad was transferred and she and I saw each other only during summer vacations. We had always planned to go to England when we graduated from high school. To make a long story short, that trip was the end of our friendship, but I did meet a lot of fantastic people when I went out travelling on my own! Unfortunately for my friend (at the time) she was miserable and home sick for pretty much the entire time. Yikes! I cried too...on the plane back home! *L* Anyhow, at one point I was in Birmingham with 2 Americans and 2 German girls (if memory serves me and it sometimes doesn't Wink...we'd missed the last train and it was absolutely freezing! We met up with some policemen who offered us some tea and the warm inside of a police station until the train station opened up again in the morning. I think they just wanted us off the streets because we never did get any tea, even though we harassed them mercilessly for it! *L*

Okay, after removing one due to a BIG blunder on my part, here is your next clue! Smile

Country, city/town, name of building...you know the drill. Smile

Bonus points for describing a bit of interesting history related to something found inside the building. (Hope that doesn't sound too obscure.)

Oh! Just to let you know c.i., I was able to find the answer to your clue so quickly because of the date on the carving. 1792 in roman numerals. Smile

This is the pic I was going to use but didn't.

I think it would have been fairly easy to figure out, but if not, I'll tell you what it is. Smile

Reminds me of the White House- Might this be the building that inspired the US White House? Leinster House, I think? Somewhere in Ireland?

Leinster House, in Dublin, is the home of the Dail, or Irish Parliament.

I don't think it's that - but, as ever, I'm prepared to be proven wrong!

mac11: No not Europe

fealola: *L* I have a question for you! Since you started this thread, I propose that we have a rule -- no continents (other than Australia, since it's a continent and country all rolled into one!), what do you think?

c.i.: Not Australia

cjhsa: Not Canada

c.i.: No, not a government building or library. I believe the building is likely owned and operated by the government (I don't know this for an absolute fact, but it's likely true) so in that sense it may be considered a government building, but its function is not to house government as, say, the House of Representatives in the U.S.

margo: *L* I suppose I deserve that! Wink

Equus: Not inspired by the White House. Not Leinster House. Not in Ireland.

Smile

Caprice: Are you saying we shouldn't ask what continent it's in?
(I'm not sure if I understand) That's a primary question for narrowing down the location. (FYI we don't count specific guesses as questions.. only ones that narrow things down.) Maybe you mean something else??
