Equus: Yes, the West Edmonton Mall is presently the world's largest shopping centre. Aside from shopping there is also a hotel, an indoor water park, an indoor amusement park (formerly known as Fantasyland for years before Disney got their panties in a twist), a mini golf course, a national hockey league sized ice rink and more. I made the mistake of going shopping there with my niece for boxing day (2002) and vowed never to do that again. My feet were sooooo sore! (For those who don't know, Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. It's one of the biggest shopping days of the year, kind of like the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. except I don't think the deals are as good. *L*)

Gee, with a name like Equus, I expected to see a horse avatar and not Herman Munster! Wink (I know it's not really Herman...close enough though!)

*LOL* Well perhaps it would have been a more apt description many years ago when bargains were REALLY good...*wistful sigh*...but these days the sales aren't quite as good. With inventory controls much better than in the past, retailers don't have to unload as much as they used to. Guess technology isn't always a good thing. Wink

caprice, The reason we don't see better after christmas sales is because sales are on 12 months out of the year. Inventory control may be a little better, but seasonal stuff has to be sold, because the carrying cost of holding inventory for a year is very expensive.

C.I. I may have just missed the joke here but Boxing Day is so called because it was traditionally the day when the Postman, Milkman, dustbinman etc got their annual gratuity known as a "Christmas Box" hence it became known as Boxing Day.

Explanations for the origin of the name have varied, with some believing that it derived from the opening of alms boxes that had been placed in churches for the collection of donations to aid the poor.

However, it certainly may come from the boxes of gifts given to employees on the day after Christmas - that's in times before "Postman, Milkman, dustbinman etc"

I was being a bit PC there Walter, I was referring to people who do the more mundane tasks than their masters of the time.

Walter, I agree with you as usual, I was merely using a more modern day analogy, rather than talking about serfs and servants.

Not Louisiana

The desciption again:
The photo I'm looking at is a brick-and-wood mansion/estate house, of modest proportions, apparently one story with high ceiling (although the part of the building out of the picture may or may not have more stories) with an iron (maybe wood?) grille porch/entryway. On the well-tended front lawn is a old cannon set in concrete as decoration, and a flagpole flying the French flag. Big hint: this is not France nor a French territory. Specifically where is this and why is this building notable?

Equus, Your verbal picture is nice, but you know that old Asian saying, "picture worth a thousand words." Wink

It is not out of obstinacy that I do not give you a photo. I will give you a picture as soon as I can. I would love to do so. I apologize for my failure to do so. I do not have my own computer because I am miserably poor and must use local library computers, which seem to have locked out the ability to repost photos. The last time I posted a photo to able2know I did so from my work computer and I have since become unemployed.

For what it's worth, I've probably spent two hours trying to load the photo or at least a similar one. Call me ignorant if you wish.

The original rules of this game don't require a photo but I agree it is much to be desired. In the meantime, bear with me. There is not much more information to be obtained from this particular photo. Once someone guesses correctly (assuming I haven't posted the photo by then) I'll give you a website address where you can see it.

Equus, Never intended to belittle your efforts or offend you on this forum. I'm a 'visual' kind of guy, and pictures are my strength. Don't take offense at my 'weakness.' Wink
