Yeah, you got it exactly. So far I am not aware of any science that explains away this possibility. I am agnostic by nature and believe that any objective investigation into the question of the origin of consciousness must hold both possibilities in abeyance.
It sounds like Kaseijin wants to do that and only makes the assumption of consciouness as a means to expedite the discussion. I hope that's the case.
If not, then I will need to see some proof of science' ability to distinguish the expression of consciousness from consciousness. That appears no easy task, but doesn't require us to explain Qualia to make that distinction.
That said, I don't believe the distinction can be made from our side of the looking glass, therefore my argument for abeyance.
