In Louisiana, tax cheats are called "nonconformists"?

The fishermen and the tax man

BP's request for tax records poses a problem for some residents of fishing communities in southeastern Louisiana " the nonconformists who haven't kept records or reported their cash income.

Caution - the politically correct among us are sure to pile on calling you a Nazi. Those non-tax-filers are Mexicans, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc, ie residents not exactly registered with the local authorities. You want to reconsider your prior stance on illegal immigration, let me watch how you go about that one Smile

@DrewDad,
Well, if their compensation for oil spill damage is going to be based on conforming to tax codes, I suppose BP will forever have a warm place in their hearts for nonconformists.

@High Seas,
i've made reference to legal residents who dodge taxes on the immigration threads before, it's common among legal immigrants who come from countries where they don't trust the government, or areas where the black market and an under the table cash only system is common

i worked with some african folks who had got their canadian citizenship, the father worked a legitimate job, and paid taxes, but his wife and daughters (who worked on the packing line at the greenhouse i worked at) worked for a "contractor" for cash, a chinese lady who also had citizenship asked me if she could go on the books, so she could build up time for a maternity leave, before that she also worked for a "contractor" for cash, unfortunately, for her, she miscalculated and the work ran out before she got her legitimate time in

@High Seas,
That's quite a non sequitur.

First, the article never refers to illegal immigrants; it refers to people who operate on a cash basis and fail to report their incomes to the IRS.

Second, I've read about the government stating that even workers not authorized to work in the U.S. are still subject to income tax, and that people working under false Social Security numbers were eligible for benefits.

Benefits, yes - free room and board in the federal pen, followed by deportation. Same location, btw, where the bureaucrats of the "Minerals Revenue Management" (MRM) should already be encamped en masse. Followed by many more. Please educate yourself before posting any more nonsense:

@High Seas,
No, no, no. You're wrong about who doesn't pay taxes in Louisiana. There might some first and second generation folks out there shrimping who aren't with the Internal Revenue code, but they pale in comparison to numbers of Cajun fishers who haven't voluntarily paid a dime to any government since they arrived in the bayous as Acadians.

If you ask them, they'll tell you that to your face.

@DrewDad,
Actually, those not entitled to a social security number can apply to the IRS for an Individual Taxpayer's Identification Number for purposes of paying taxes. IRS, SS Administration, and whatever they now call the Immigration and Naturalization are completely separate entities. The number doesn't legalize anything, but permits them to legally pay federal income taxes.

It is a screwy system, and the employer is forever in the middle.

@Joe Nation,
Hi Joe. This thread is specific to residents of LA and other coastal states entitled to benefits from this latest oil disaster. There's more to it, not all yet available from the inspector general's reports >

> and certainly the insurers / reinsurers aren't disclosing any data yet. See other thread (started by Robert Gentel) where nuclear option - literally - is being discussed. Link: http://able2know.org/topic/144532-3#post-4002533

@High Seas,
Only if INS gets 'em. The Social Security Administration will happily pay benefits.

Also doesn't change the fact that your post was a complete non sequitur and an attempt to derail the conversation into immigration issues. There are plenty of threads around for that conversation.

@DrewDad,
The opposite is true - I showed your inconsistency by quoting your very own words.

No matter - you're too frantically bigoted to be bothered with facts, so please continue without any reality-based interference from me, at any rate Smile

@High Seas,
What fantasy world do you inhabit? I can't decide if you're off your meds, or if you started smoking something new, but WTF did that have to do with illegal immigrants?

You put the "ook" in "kook".

You better call your local AG's office before you become accessory to SS fraud - investigated by the FBI, btw, not the INS. You got nothing better to do during the next 20 to 30 years, continue peddling this fantasy - am only writing for the sake of the presumed innocents online who might believe you.

@High Seas,
Of course, the whole point of this thread is that folks who have made a habit of avoiding income taxes will not be eligible for reimbursement from BP.

Thank you for playing.
