Diane Mapes writes: It’s a food lover’s nightmare: One minute you’re enjoying a delicious bit of pine nut pesto and the next, everything you taste is nauseatingly bitter.

That’s what happened to Christian Niles, a 29-year-old software engineer from San Francisco.

“I made a cream sauce with about a cup of pureed pine nuts and about an hour after the meal, I had a cookie with blueberries in it and the blueberries were really bitter,” says Niles. “Then everything just turned bitter.”

@ebrown p,
Actually they do.... They are called pinenuts because they grow on pine trees you moron. Try educating yourself before you try to sound intelligent.

@ehBeth,
Actually, that was a very funny comment. Regretfully, FU will never understand why.

@ebrown p,
The absolute cheapest place I have found for pine nuts is Costco. They are 15 bucks for one and a half pounds, so they are 5 or 6 bucks less a pund than anywhere else. Good luck!!

@farmerman,
Ha, Ha, Ha! That is just too funny as I stopped by Costco after work yesterday and the dang things were $24.99. Imagine paying that for a little flavor. I just shook my head and said NO thank you. I made some pesto because I have basil coming out the ears also. Just add pecans you really can't tell that much difference. I use pine nuts to sprinkle on my roasted veggies and love it, but not any more. Perhaps the squirels are eating all up so that is why they are so dang expensive...

@LinaJ,
Some years, there are lots of them; sometimes they are scarce. The local medicine men used to be able to predict next year's hanta virus outbreaks based on this years pinon nuts. More nuts meant more deer mice, which meant more hanta virus.

@ehBeth,
Replying to this old post of ehBeth's - I just bought a batch of almonds (bulk, 5.79 a pound) and it's time to take the basilico plant inside and de-leaf. Yaaay!
