Some 15 years ago Ray an Felicia bought the cute little house next to ours, we live on a cul de sac with 10 homes on each side of the street. Ray and Felecia are Puerto Rican but lived for 25 years in NYC where he was a cook. they are in the 80's. When they moved here to albaturkey neither of them ever came out into their yard because they were afraid of criminals (from living in NYC) gradually they began to come outside and Ray planted dozens of roses around his front yard and began socializing with the neighbors and Felicia began using her walker to stroll to the end of the street and back and her health has continued to regress and she now gets kidney dialysis 4 times a week. Ray has gotten feeble and falls every now and then. Their grown children still live in NYC.
Phil lives on the other side of them, he is retired from 28 years in the army, was a mexican citizen but got US citizenship while in the army. He still works 2 part time jobs but manages to maintain Ray and Felicias house as much as he can. He was been trying to talk Ray and Felicia into moving into a nursing house but both Ray and Felicia are determined to die in their home. Everyone on our street keep and eye on Ray and Felicia as they often forget to close their doors (especially the garage-they don't have a car and never did.
Last evening Ray came over to our house and suggested we all get together and make a phone-tree of neighbors that Ray can call if he falls or needs help with felicia. we immediately added our number.
People helping people just because it's a good thing to do.

Sounds very nearly like conditions at the apartments. Once they settle in, they are determined to stay until the very end. We keep close tabs on the ones in need of it.
