How do I get rid of Windows Live Messanger?

I hate it. It slows down start-up (at least I think it does). I never use it. I trash the icon and it comes back like a noxious weed every 5 minutes.

I want it gone. Who do I have to pay?

Seriously, is there a way to get rid of it permenantly?

@djjd62,
Ah! I have windows 7, so it's different, but thanks for the entry point. To uninstall Messenger, I had to click on

start --> Control Panel --> Programs --> Programs and Features --> click to check Windows Live Essentials --> click Uninstall/Change --> click to check Messenger --> click continue to uninstall

@littlek,
I had disable that nasty little program with XP from starting by using msconfig under run, however other programs would still call it in such as outlook and then not allow me to end it!

I needed to tell a security monitoring program by the name of "Process Guard"
to block it from running under any conditions.

@littlek,
I think at least under XP the messanger program that show up in uninstall is not the same one as "live messanger".

@littlek,
Good morning, k

(you realize I'm not a computer guru, don't you? Smile )

But this is how I did it ... (using Windoes XP)

Click the "start" Icon (bottom left hand of your screen)
Click the "Set program access & Default" icon
Click "Add & Remove programs"
Click the "Change or remove programs" option
(Which will supply you with a list of all your installed programs)
Find Messenger in that list
Right click on it
It will now be highlighted in blue, with a "remove" option box
Click the "remove" option.
And it's removed for you!

That's what I did, for the same reasons as you.

(Now I'm betting some guru whizz will come along & tell me I did the wrong thing! Wink

How to get it back again is a complete mystery! Razz

@msolga,
There are lots of others.

It's odd, though. I MUST have Windows Messenger somewhere, since I have Vista....and it has never made a nuisance of itself in any way.

MsO, I figured out how to do it earlier on the thread! Sorry I wasn't clear about that. I did a similar thing as you did, but it's slightly different on windows 7.

@littlek,
You mean I completely wasted my time,k?

This was (I was so hoping!) my one & only technical guru moment on A2K! And now you've gone & spoiled it! Razz

@littlek,
Hooray for the enjoyable bit, k!

Things got pretty unenjoyable on your old computer, for a while there!

Windows 7 is a complete mystery (like so many other things!) to me!

One day I'll know more, I'm sure.
