15 months ago my sometime girlfriend and all the time friend of 10 years, lost her battle with cancer. She didn't tell anyone she was sick. I would like to share what I wrote last year with you with you.
Why
I asked you why you were pale
You said you had the flu
I asked you about your cough
You said it was only a cold
Why didn't you tell me?
Did you think I would leave you?
I noticed how thin you were getting
You laughed and said you diet was working
I was worried at how weak you seemed
You claimed it was just the heat
We loved each other for many years
Why couldn't you tell me?
You said you were going to visit your mom
I should have known by how you packed
You said you would be back soon
I should have seen the truth in your eyes
How could I not see it eating you up from within?
Why was I so blind to what happened?
You fought the darkness alone
I could have given you my strength
You lay in that bed with no one with you
I would have held your hand forever
Your mom called me near the end
I came to you as fast as I could
Why did you wait too long for me to say
Goodbye
Fedral, What a beautiful, but sad tribute. She obviously wanted to spare you the ache of her illness. She must have been one special lady, and you one special friend. We had a friend who did the same thing. We never knew that he was dying until the very end. Beautifully written, Fedral.
A very unselfish person, and you shared her pain the best possible way, without knowing it, the way she wanted it.
