The Malfunction Light came on and the owners manual indicates that it means that there is a problem with an exhaust related component. Before taking this problem the dealer I was wondering if it may relate to something I can replace myself such as a filter. If I am able to repair it myself, does the light go off automatically once the repair is made or does it have to be reset?

@fbs458,
Get the computer read so that you know the error code, this will pretty much tell you what the problem is. If you are in America you can get this done for free at some auto supply stores. Given the age most likely you are looking at a bad sensor or a bad Cat converter. Unless you need to sell it or pass an emissions test doing nothing might be an option, but get the code anyways.
