The crux of the problem of the Israel/Palestine conflict is that an extremist state, the state of Israel which is bent on maintaining an ethnocentrically discriminatory and oppressive state at the expense of the Palestinian peoples, is allowed to exist at all, and what's more, efforts by the world powers are made to accommodate this contemptible state, and the Palestinian peoples are forced to negotiate the terms of their repression.

It throttles the mind to think that a country like the US, which in light of its own dark history of oppressive and discriminatory racism has made tremendous strides to redress these injustices in pursuit of greater equality and enfranchisement, is the prime supporter of such a state.

In terms of realpolitik, the US' military and political leaders such as Gen. Petraeus and President Obama are slowly starting to realize that its support for such a state what with its conflict with the peoples it oppresses is a liability to the security of the country.
