go to wikipedia.org. search for "submarine". that and google should always be the first thing you do when you have a homework assignment. basically it was invented to blow up ships.

@Zora n ricky,
It was invented in order to traverse the seas while submerged.

The more you know.

@gustavratzenhofer,
Consider this. On the ocean, there are submarines and targets

well, actually, farmer, there are targets-above and targets-below. Once the Allies got their act together in WWII, total German U-boat losses were generally thought to be between 70 and 80 %--it was a pretty hazardous way to make a living. Don't know how well the nukes would do today--hasn't really been tested.

@MontereyJack,
I was attempting some humor that was originated by folks in the sub service. I used it once to get on Georgeob's case (he can attest to the fact that I did not make that up). He just said something about smartass submariners and that it was an old joke .

I never like the idea of driving around blindfolded at full speed while taking directions from some other blind guy whose just got a better sense of hearing.

The generally held naval opinion is that there are more targets above and less below due to modern submarines. Thus every nation tries to have a submarine, but no-one is in a hurry to own an aircraft carrier.

a) They had run out of ships to invent
b) It was a failed attempt to improve the market size for screen doors
c)It was a joke that someone took seriously
