If there were no limit on money you could spend and the amount of time to fully explore, where in the world would you travel to and why?

@jtassistant,
If there are no limits: everywhere.

If I had to pick one: Mt. Everest. It's very expensive to summit, but I'd love to.

@Robert Gentel,
I would like to go everywhere, too. This is pretty much impossible at any age as the more you know an area the more you know that you don't know, if you are interested in all the history, etc. - but especially impossible for some of us. Given I'm open to "everywhere" and would be well funded, I have some places I've long wanted to see:

Europe, which I've read so much about. Haven't been to other than Italy, which is always first on my list, and which I like very much, but I imagine if I were there more, I'd want to venture out to other european countries and then other places:
(in present order of interest)
-follow the Danube River from Germany to the Black Sea, as described in the book Danube by Claudio Magris;
-visit Estonia, where a friend is from, Sweden, Poland, Germany;
-England, Irelands, Scotland, Wales (my heritage is mostly irish)
-Spain, Spain, Spain. Portugal.
-France - Morocco/Algeria
-Brazil (Argentina, Chile, Equador, Colombia, oh, give me a year)
I am not mentioning Mexico since I have been there quite a bit and like it. I would like to see Mexico DF again.
-Japan - Australia - Vietnam - India (that should take a while)
-several other african countries, with my niece
I see I skipped Russia and Mongolia and China. Well, another year there.

Oh, and while I have been to and liked Canada as a child, I have online pals there now, long lost family I could root out in Ontario, and a hankering to see British Columbia: therefore Canada could be a nice stop off for some of these other flights.

Fantasy is good. I spent part of today re-compiling a list of low-end hotels for a visit to Rome (very unlikely for financial reasons). This exercise keeps me acquainted with the city map.

First, a prolonged tour of Europe, with special emphasis on Paris and the haunts of American expatriate writers of the past.
Then, Japan and Hong Kong.
Then Latin America.
Last but far from least, the United States, every state.

@jtassistant,
no limits on time and money?

I'd travel to wherever there are trains that accept passengers and just ride ride ride the trains. Best class available. I want to be pampered while I'm at it.

I should have explained more about the whys of my choices - there are pretty broad reasons. I want to see what the world looks like in real life. I thrive on walking cities (or did) and like experiencing different landscapes, not so much as a hiker/climber, but a walker who paints. Once I'm in an area, I start reading about the local history and try to talk with people.
Past all that, I want to try out the food.

I'm so damn dull that I'd like to see the handfull of states in America that I haven't been to.

For a long time I've had a hobby of asking tourists if I can take their photo when I see them gobbed up and rotating through photo ops. From them I've learned what a wonderful experience visiting America is.

America is a beautiful place and there are still a dozen states I haven't seen.

After that I'd like to do Canada and the rest of Mexico and Central America.

The only place I'd REALLY like to go is outer space.

@jtassistant,
As others have said, if money was no object, I'd like to go literally everywhere. Maybe give up even having a home base. I'm quite comfortable living out of suitcases; have done that for a month, six weeks at a time. Hotels rooms and state rooms on luxury cruise ships are cool.

First I'd probably want to go to the Antipodes -- Australia and New Zealand. I live in the tropics now (Hawaii) but have never, ever been south of the Equator. And I have some pretty close relatives in Oz, most of them people I've never met, first cousins once removed and that. Work up from there, through New Guinea, Indonesia, that part of the world until I get to Southeast Asia. Spend some time Thailand, go on to India, Tibet, Nepal.

Man, I'm getting tired just thinking and writing about it.

Glad to see someone thinking of Oz!

Things is different here, ya know!

That said, I've been to every state in Oz, but there are many parts I haven't seen. It's roughly the same size as mainland USA, you know, without the population.

My first choice is always Europe. Despite 8 - 10 trips, there is still a lot I haven't seen, and many places I'd like to see again.

And then - I guess the big Nortamericano question. Never been there. Where to go? Just keep going... I don't mind living out of suitcases.

After that - the rest of the world.

@jtassistant,
I'm an everywhere whore, too. Let me just nail down my first choices... (and by Bob, I'm GOING to Ireland as soon as I get a job and cobble enough money together.) My kids are now putting in to go as well. It appears we have one drunken Irish party happening withn the year.

So, the Emerald Isle.
Italy
Bali, some lovely remote island
NY
Spain
the EEs
Israel

I'm sure I'll add to my list as time progresses.

@jtassistant,
Tokyo. It would be scary going to a country not knowing the language but I love the techcentric culture.

@hamburgboy,
Right now (and for the past few days) I've had this urge to be either on Hunting Island (off the coast of South Carolina) or Cumberland Island (off the coast of Georgia). This is the beach on hunting island:
http://theoasisofmysoul.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/windowslivewritertohuntingislandsc-11ae5beach-thumb.jpg

this is cumberland island - there are wild horses that live there
http://z.about.com/d/gosoutheast/1/0/a/M/-/-/cumberlandisland_gatsm.JPG

Two fairly undeveloped coastal islands with Charleston and Savannah (two of my favorite east coast US cities) in reasonable proximity. The warmth and familiar and easy rhythmn and cadence of the people, life, and food there would be really comforting right now. I can almost see and feel myself walking on the beach.

The water would be a little brisk yet, but I could travel down to the keys and in a few weeks (or maybe a month) - bingo- it'd feel like I was back in the womb.

If I could travel anywhere in the world right now - that's where I'd go.
