We are installing double french doors off of the entryway (at ground level) into the formal living room (one step down) . My question is which way should the doors swing? Into the entryway (at same level) or into the living room (with a step down) ?

@tub4mca,
We had French doors between the living room and sunporch of my former house. They opened into the living room because it was larger.

There are interior glass paned doors in my present house: one closing the living room from the hallway; the other closing the dining room from the same hallway. Both doors open into their respective rooms. If they opened into the hallway, they would create a traffic obstacle. As they are installed, they open flat against a wall which means they are out of the way.

Consider other doors and the traffic flow in your own home as well the comparative size of both spaces.

I agree they should swing in.

But have you considered pocket doors?

@boomerang,
I would love pocket doors between my living room and dining room . . . you enter the house through a small vestibule in front which opens into the stair hall. The living room is on the right as you enter and the stairs rise on the left. The living room, dining room and kitchen all form a string to the right, going from front to back.

I would love pocket doors so that I can enclose the living room and take the sheets off the furniture. I recovered my furniture and need to preserve it from cat claws and cat puke. Right now, the furniture is under sheets!

There are things that need to be done that are more important than pocket doors, although they would add beauty to the house and safety to the furniture!

One thing to consider: the installation of pocket doors might mean relocating electrical wires within the walls.

I think that it would be safer if you had the doors swing in. This way you are not trying to step down and open the door at the same time.
