@Rockhead,
Sorry, not much firewood out here at all, we're pretty much on the prairie out here.

@wayne,
yup. mostly I get downed trees from hedge rows locally. lotsa farmers taking them out now.

there's a big oak forest down at the scout ranch, but it's about $75 of gas to get there and back. my trailer isn't big enough to make it pay off...

I have a tree that mr vw's kid brought me midsummer that I used for landscaping. giant 3 foot across stumps. mystery wood. smooth bark. long straight grain. mebbe beech...

anyways, I've had the wedges and big boy sledge out breaking them down. that will make a man out of you in a hurry. but the wood is hard and heavy. it burns pretty good if I keep it dry...

got enough of it to go half the winter, but I will hafta rethink how to landscape the pond next year. I kept thinking I would get a lot more wood this summer, but the hell wave mostly kicked my ass to the point that the winter feels ominous right now...

@Rockhead,
We don't have too many hedge rows even, there's Cottonwoods along the river but who wants to burn that, you'd be up all night stokin the fire.
I'm originally from Topeka, lot's more trees up thatta way.
I know where there's a couple walnut bushes around here Smile

@Rockhead,
I remember using wedges back in high school, split wood all summer once, hard work for sure.

@wayne,
yeah. walnut burns nice.

smoky apparently had some walnut chunks stashed outside the barn...

key word being had. Embarrassed

they burned real nice, I remember wondering how I got walnut mixed with my elm and cedar junk.

I have a lot of scrap wood that I will burn in the shop stove. It is a lot bigger, and has a short, easily cleaned out chimbley. I even have an oil dripper on it, but it is more trouble than it's worth usually. fire hazard if I get wonky and forgetful. yucky stinky heavy smoke one night all over in town. cars driving around trying to find out what was fogging the city... Shocked

I have a splitter I can borrow when I get enough stuff cut to length to make it worthwhile to haul it over. Nissan guy has that as part of my on call mechanic service payment.

@wayne,
I don't got a cow.

and I don't aim to harvest goat pellets...

I'll get another hedge tree to drag home. been talking to my neighbor about a couple that he wants dropped. just gotta set about and cut them down. gonna need a helper, they are 50 footers. but out in the field where all I gotta miss is a barbed wire fence...

there is still a lot of downed wood on my property, too. but none of it is desirable...

and then there is the real problem.

labor.

I had big plans today, and awesome weather, and have managed about 2 hours of solid work. a couple more of foggy zombie effort.

I'm my own worst enemy right now...

@mismi,
I gotta have enough dry wood in to go a few days.

I just don't do cold very well at all any more. nor wet wood.

I've got all night to get it done. I'm baking a potato now. trying to knock my nausea down with the aroma...

@GracieGirl,
that's kinda funny, gracie.

I just took a glass out to the shop for a scoop of industrial baking soda from my soda blaster. my fridge is stinky.

As I was bringing it in to the house, I thought to myself that if the cops come to visit me, some lab tech is gonna have to test this stuff for purity...

I have good days and bad days.

don't let it get you down, kiddo...
