heh...

I laid down to breathe and meditate for a bit. not having the greatest day so far.

dink had to be a putz and make sure I knew he hadn't been given wet food yet tonight. I'm running behind, what can I say...

anyways, when he realized I was just gonna lay there, he started eating my arm. grabbed my hand with both of his, and started chomping on me.

I got up and fed him...

@Rockhead,
No, just working on my boler. It's bare naked now, I've taken it completely apart. Just wondering, it's got a lot of spider cracks...
Should I sand it right down or grind out the wee cracks and spread bondo or not? Never done anything like this before.
I bought a fiberglass repair kit, but winter is coming and I'm not sure if I should do this now or wait till spring. I'm not sure how long it takes to dry or if the brutal temps will screw with the curing time.

I wish I had a corvette...

@Ceili,
no you don't. I promise.

no bondo. glass doesn't take it well. (you can use a very little bit as a surface smoother. don't fill cracks with it...)

I would get some cloth and lay a new layer on it if it were me. I'd prolly wait till spring, but it will cure ok unless it's freezing out. it makes it's own heat.

a 48 hour weather window would get you clear.

I can prolly find you a video worth watching on how to do it.

it's not hard, just messy and noxious. (I kinda like the high)

@Ceili,
this isn't a bad how to, but if you get good with the glass, you will need almost no filler.

drilling the end of the crack is a real good plan.

you can go in small stages. it lets you work into it again and again. better than having it set up on you before you are ready for it...

are you working from the back side?

and are you gonna try to paint it?

That's the post where the boler pics are. I will be filling the actual holes with cloth and resin, and a pre-coat of gel coat. The spider cracks are on the outside and I'll be filling them from the front. Hope that makes sense... I'm just not sure what to do. Do I drill all the cracks out and then fill them, should I fill them with something else than bondo?
Yes, I will be painting it. Not till the spring, after allllllllll the work is done.
I haven't watched the video yet. I will, just want some advice from an expert.
Thanks

I think ceili was just jerking my rope to shut me up on that other thread, but hey.

it worked...

and I'm all woozy from stripping. but almost done. all 4 fenders (2 of them are rough as a cob) and the hood are shiny clean metal. ready for plastic and hammers.

my fingers will be glad when we are done with this phase. steel wool and gloves sucks...

@Ceili,
fill them with glass and resin if you can.

can you see the cracks all the way through. on both sides?

can you get me a closer up view of the cracks? I would hate to give you poor advice because we're talking apples and oranges...

I think I would prolly commit to recoating it from the inside if it were me. then smoothing the outside and paint it. but I have tools and skills that make that the easy decision.

you could re-coat it from the outside, and then use a textured paint as well...

@Rockhead,
Well, on the credit side, dink has stopped gnawing at your arm & you can now put your feet up & relax for a while. Enjoy your relax.
