@Ionus,
I'm not 100% sure ima do chooks.

I might find myself unable to finish the job come harvest time...

@Rockhead,
(Just popping in to say I'm enjoying your random musings, Rocky.)

I don't know that I could do the necessary "harvesting", either. And I'd probably end up with a lot of spoiled rotten, cantankerous, aging chooks! Laughing

Do you have a shady spot for the fish to hide from birds ? I have a theory that fish get stressed if they cant hide.

@msolga,
actually it's kinda hot. Shocked

my "farm" is old horse pasture, and I could smell the fertilizer whilst I was tilling it...

got 14 tomatoes (6 jetstar, 6 early girl, a heinz roma and a grape.)

8 broccoli's, and also 10 peppers. no hot ones yet, ain't decided what I want there...

tomorrow I have yellow squash, cantaloupe, zucchini and okry to plant...

and asparagus is soaking.

i'm tarred...

@Rockhead,
I planted tomatoes, pole beans, onion sets, egg plant, cucumbers, corn and brussel sprout seedlings today. Started a bunch of seeds for leeks, bok choy, lettuce and squash.

Still have more tomatoes, sweet peppers seedlings to set out and a bunch of herb, carrot, and parsnip seeds to direct sow. Am expecting a couple pomegranate trees to arrive next week and then I think we'll be all set until the second wave of crops in the fall.

@Butrflynet,

i mostly only plant stuff I eat, unless I get a request. so no sprouts.

i forgot, i do have cukes to go in the morning as well.

I want to figure out a trellis for my melons.

think Ima do lattice set on cinder blocks over them.

@Rockhead,
links of chain-link fencing, well anchored, make good melon trellis.

anybody here got experience raising chooks?

I have your back here Mr Peebles.

If you have a garden dont let em free range. Dont bother with a rooster they are agressive and a pain in the arse for neighbours and yourself when they crow at 4 am. Just buy pullets each year. If you want 12 chickens buy 3 each year and keep em rotating. Chooks lay well for about 4 years then begin to tail off.

Build a mobile pen and they can be used as a fertilising tractor tilling machine.

@dadpad,
ain't building much.

got several existing structures, one of which has had chickens previously...

got 2/3 of the garden planted now. heavy rains last night, everything held up nicely.

trying Dys's melon theory, even though he fell down on expainifying it to me.

tomorrow I plant seed rows.

question of the day:

what are pole beans?

got some poles...

then what???

string up some of the chain link then plant seeds
Pole beans are your basic climbing bean (as opposed to french bean which is a low growing bush type.

dwarf french

Also... adding purple beanswill give you a better/longer harvest spread. If i remeber correctly they come in bush and climbing types

@Rockhead,
If you decide against chooks you can always grow egg plants.
