Ok, here's a tough one for me. What movie sequels are improvements on the original? Not remakes, mind you, there are a lot of those, but sequels.
Off the top of my head I can only think of Terminator 2 vs. Terminator 1.
Any film buffs out there who know of better sequels than the original (and Star Wars style prequels and all don't count, the sequel has to chronologically follow the prequel in terms of when it was made).
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is the best of the Leoni's Spaghetti western trilogy.
I would agree that this movie is better than the other two, but this example (in my opinion) doesn't really qualify under the guidelines that Robert posted.
Thinking on other movies at the moment....

I guess this could be debate pretty passionately, but I think Godfather 2 edged out the original. I feel like there's another one I'm blanking on...
"Nora the Piano Cat: The Sequel -- Better than the original!"
You know that "Nora the Piano Cat: The Sequel" is better than the original because it says so on the Youtube page for "Nora the Piano Cat: The Sequel."

The Empire Strikes Back was better than the original Star Wars (IV).
That was part of a planned trilogy. I don't think it counts.

Die Hard with a Vengeance was better then Die Hard 2, but not so much better then the first one.
Though the last one was garbage compared to the first three.

@Robert Gentel,
I fell that T1 and T2, and Alien and Aliens, are all on par with their counterpart each with strengths and weaknesses unique to each film.
I think that Sam Raimi's film Army Of Darkness was the best of the Evil Dead sequence, although they were all good in their own way. Also, AOD is 'set up' by the prior films and I think it's best when viewed in sequence.
