Someone at the mac store in arcata, ca, told me something like eight years ago that if I was really concerned about lightning strikes I should get a voltage meter (or regulator, I forget the exact words). I declined.
We didn't get much lightning in our old neighborhood so I was spooked about it when I moved to that area.
@ossobuco,
An outlet surge protection is dirty cheap and offer some protection at least.
A direct or near lightening strike is a horse of another color and a UPS running all the time is the only way of offering even fair protection from such an event.
@Phoenix32890,

@Phoenix32890,
I turn it off, my health much more important for me, I am sure that computers make negative affect on human health and I sleep in the room where my computer is, so i turn it off definitely!!!
In the time that I originally wrote this thread, I have gone back to cable, and am using an iMac. I put my computer to "sleep" each time that I am finished using it. During the lightning season, I turn the computer completely off, and the first sound of thunder.
From what I understand, surge suppressor will help with voltage spikes, but if you get a direct lightning hit, be prepared to buy a new computer. One of the storms in my area fried a
USB port on my iMac.
@Phoenix32890,
i do this many times, because sometimes, i want to download movies from internet or i forget to turn off my computer.
@Phoenix32890,
Yeh turning off yor PC is bright idea than to be hanging with a burnt down PC !
@Phoenix32890,
Yes i do turn off my computer whenever i am not working on it. I think its best practice.
@Phoenix32890,
If you are concerned with lightning or thunderstorm, you can hibernate your computer and switch off the power outlet for safety reasons. I've been doing this with my laptop and it's fine.
However if you use Windows 8, you can switch the computer off as Win 8's start up time is very fast.
yes of course i daily shutdown my laptop otherwise my system will get heat.
@Phoenix32890,
Turn off for your PC's life
@Phoenix32890,
I like this suggestion so I shall follow it like the 11th commandment. All naysayers and blasphemers be gone with your turn the computer off LIES. You dirty, dirty liars and your lying LIES. Go back to your father, from whence you came, demon child of Satan!
@Phoenix32890,
Turn Off. Because computer performance generally benefits from an occasional reboot.
@Phoenix32890,
Switch off screen rather than leaving in ‘sleep mode’
@PaulAdam0,
My wife turns it off, but I leave it on.
