Rain Gutters

On one side of my house the sun does not hit very often. My rain gutter goes down then elbows under a cement pad. Where the gutter elbows, it freezes, then builds up and freezes up the gutter. I have to take my gutter apart every year (it is frozen solid), now I just have an icy mess because the water now is just dripping on my cement pad. I have tried the plug in ice strips but they do not seem to work on the elbow.

@lpace,
By "plug in ice strips" do you mean heat tape, Ipace? What kind of outside temps do you have, ie. daytime high and overnight low?

@lpace,
There shouldn't be standing water to freeze where the gutter elbows. It sounds like you have a low spot there??

@TTH,
A small flow of water, ie. drips, will cause freeze ups on vertical surfaces, there are after all, frozen waterfalls, especially if the elbow is metal.
